Greetings all! I am currently in the closing stages of my new house design and would like feedback regarding 2 post lift placement within my attached workshop. The attached workshop interior measurements are 28’ length, 22.5’ width with 14’ ceilings.

I have chosen the Bendpak 10APX as my lift.

The preliminary placement of the lift can be seen in the pictures below. Bendpak recommends 12’ front and rear clearance. However, I placed the lift farther back to allow for additional space up front.

I plan to lift mostly 4 door sedans and mid sized SUVs. I figured if I lift the occasional truck, I could lift it symmetrically to allow for the garage door to be closed.

Please let me know your thoughts. What other layout options should I be considering?

Any insight and lessons learned would be appreciated!

I think you'll be fine. Since it's a symmetric lift, you can always back the vehicle in if you need more space toward rear of vehicle.

Will you be doing other "activities" ie; fabrication/ welding, woodworking etc.?
A lift really dominates the space it's in and in your situation, the whole space except for along the walls. If you expect only occasional lift use, a little sacrifice of its optimum position for the sake of project space might be something to consider.
I have a separate 'bay' for my lift and I walk around it more than under it. But that's just me and when I use it, it makes it all worth it.

I plan on learning some light duty welding in the future, and any wood work would be limited to ripping plywood. My activities will mostly revolve around car maintenance.

Appreciate your input. I will probably nudge the lift 12" towards the front. Just wanted to make sure I'm not boxing myself out if I need to lift a longer large truck or similar in the future.

I just measured my lift placement from the posts to a 2nd floor mezzanine. It's 9'6" on the front or drive in (engine) side. The biggest regular vehicle is a f150 super cab long bed and I don't have any difficulties doing mostly maintenance and oil changes.👍

When I had my 40x60x16 shop built, I put roll up doors centered front and rear in the middle. I put my BendPak XPR10-A about 12 feet back from the rear door. With front and rear door, I can pull all the way through, and the placement of the lift works great even when lifting my extended cab GMC. I went with the "wide" configuration, I can even pull my travel and utility trailer between the posts if needed.

Being able to open front and rear doors, and pull a truck and trailer all the way through, comes in handy when I need to load or unload something heavy from them - just pull between the posts, set the lift arms to clear the bedsides or trailer sides, and use ratchet straps or whatever to lift the item up enough, pull the truck and trailer out, then lower the item to the floor.IMG_3475.JPGShop with lift.jpg

If It was me

I wouldn’t center it side to side.
I would favor one side for some extra space

maybe go 4’3” on one side and the other go 6’3”

On the shorter side I would plan for some movable storage
floor jack
carts
metro storage ( wire racking easily moves around ) racking on wheels

How did the placement work out? I have a 30' deep shop and just ordered a Challenger VLE10. would like to keep it as close to the door as I can to have more room upfront. Did you place yours 10' from the door? any regrets?
