2011 nec

Ordered the 2011 NEC from Amazon the other day, it arrived today. For some reason the only way they had the soft cover (paperback) was in a combination shrink wrap pack with a changes to the code book written by a third party, which I didn't want ($121), so I ended up ordering the spiral bound version. Better, it lays flat, but that dang plastic spiral won't stay in the pages, so I heated the ends and bent them 90 degrees so they cannot pull out.

It also came with a deal where you go online and answer a questionnaire and then you can download a PDF copy of the 2011 NEC also.

I'm an NFPA member. I get mine (and other such light reading material) right through them with the member discount. I don't even remember what it cost.
I too thought the download PDF version was very nice too! I have it on a thumbdrive and have actually used it a few times too although I'm more of a mark relevent pages in the book with scraps of paper when I'm searching something.
I always get softcover copies too, never used a spiral bound.
I find the tabs are a GREAT addition to quickly find sections. I especially like them for NEC.

Googled that. I don't think I see where you can read the whole 2011 code for nothing. So, if you're gonna post that, care to provide a valid link?

You have to sign up for an account on-line at the NFPA site, it's free. You get access to a read only version.

PS The NFPA 70 soft bound is $76.50 for members.

Nothing beats having your own paper copy you can flip back and forth thru. The free online version is VERY frustrating to use, you really have to know the code sections and where you want to look, before you start.

for some unknown reason, they found it important to change the article numbers for the ampacity tables. that one still pisses me off.

also requires a neutral or a way to add a neutral to all switch boxes.

I feel your frustration.
Why did they feel it was neccesary to change good old table 310-16 I'll never know either.
Yet another way that tabs come in real handy for quickly finding general sections without making a fan through the pages trying to speedread the numbers.

They want to mandate selling more wire or piping everything AND make it easy for the DIY people that can't fish wire to extend and overload circuits...

I'm sure the actual reasoning behind it is the increasing number of 'switches' that require neutrals.


Also because it's in the NEC doesn't mean it's the requirements in your area, check and see if your AHJ has adopted the 2011, and if it has if it's done it in full or part.

agreed. My personal one is tabbed(aswell as a few extras I've added for things I need frequently. but there are just some sections you remember the numbers for and it's handy when you're not using your copy.

Probably, but I like to gripe about the code.

Thankfully we are still on the 2005 code here.

Anyone thinking about making an accoun on NFPA's site, should reconsider not doing so. You'll never see the end of the junk mail. I've called and emailed them several times, and have sent several of their postage paid **** back with "politely" written notes expressing my thoughts on the matter.

That has not been my experience. One or two emails per month and maybe 1 letter every 6 months. I don't consider any of it 'junk' mail.

I'm not sure how you dodged the mailing list, but they are still sending around 5-6 pieces of mail a week, asking me to buy/subscribe to this or that. Heck, I got two things from them today. Emails I wouldn't know, those go to the spam folder.
