I'll be out at a function this evening, so I have to Lange the Auld Syne now. Just want to give a round of handshakes and say it was a pleasure picking with you guys again, and I especially want to give kudos to our inimitable host, BlueBomber, not only for his steady hand, but his handy trophy-making...

He posted a GIF a few weeks ago..., but now that the trophy has arrived, and I have had a chance to play with it, I have to say the GIF does not really do it justice. First of all, it's bigger than it looks. Also, it makes a cool noise (the pump spinning up...) like an engine revving up to top speed that increases in pitch as the needle rises.

Happy New Year! And good luck to everyone in 2020! Let's give this trophy a workout next year!

Well, my picking year is going out with a whimper. Nothing for a couple of weeks, and a day or so ago I found this bookcase on the curb . All wood/ply, (No Particle board) and the right size for behind my EZChair -25" wide 28"tall 9" deep.

Needs steel wooling and a new sealer coat. but a good size for the space.

Yeah, we are in de-Christmas mode...

Outlaw, is there a slot in the top, where a person could slip in aa additional book? If so, I have one just like it that my dad used as a child for his Worldbook encyclopedia. I keep my boatbuilding books and shooting books in it.

Happy 2019 all!

I hate to be that guy, but woke up this morning with a clear head (no idea how!) and the dawn peaking through the blinds so I went for a hoon over the Yorkshire moors to "celebrate" the new year!

Came across an antiques fair at York horse racing circuit :bounce:

>Old wooden Handscrew clamp, 6" jaw depth, no markings (£5)
>Jorgensen Handscrew clamp, Made in USA (Ch,IL) (£5)
DSC_1105.jpg

>A small V-block, no makers mark, but originally very nicely machined (£0.50)
>A small wood saw for detail work, TR&L (£2)
But what I really liked was the dates stamped on them...and the UK Military "Broad arrow" mark on the saw! seems too dainty for military work but maybe RAF aircraft fitter work during the war?? (or just for framing generals portraits!)

Finally on my way out I spotted this.....and I BLAME YOU ALL!!

Oh and the wildlife pictures are for the house....the maniti one will be going above the bath

Well, folks, the 2019 Garage Sale season closes today. Absent any last minute posts, it seems our season is lasting as long as it can! Our first find was in the UK and our last in California. In between were nearly 6500 posts worth of finds, discussions of finds, stories behind finds, advice on finding finds and a few rabbit hole discussions unrelated to GS picking. All were welcome. We collectively saved a couple of tons of old tools and other useful items from the scrap heap, land fill and/or perhaps a worse fate--sitting unused in a kitchen drawer, dusty tool box or on a basement workbench. If you believe in an afterlife, then there's gotta be a crowd of old dead guys who are pleased that someone valued their old junk and probably a few still a little pissed at how cheaply their heirs sold their tools. :)

This year we've had fewer posts than previous years, but still, it's been great to share this hobby with all of you. In my 6th year of participating in this thread, I'm still learning new things about tools, history, and where to find stuff. I plan to continue picking and following this thread, if in a diminished capacity (mostly because my garages are AT capacity--i need to sell some stuff).

I hope all of you have a very happy and prosperous New Year. May your picks be plentiful and the prices ****-worthy!

In before the wire!
I have found a few things in the doldrums that lie between X-mas and New Years, stopping in Restores and at a tiny flea I drove too far to attend (the fever runs deep):

Unmarked (but remarkable BE like) speeder, brace gimlet, and a Greenlee chisel still in the coating.

Stanley plane body (no iron or blade) cool old filehandle, and various sockets (early Thorsen, Cornwell, D-I and a '31 Snap-on oil pan socket. All told a couple of bucks. I did see an underline C band saw that was very tempting, but I already have a couple in the far shed out back needing attention.

Have a happy New Years everyone!

Nope, no top slot and no indication one was ever there, but very possibly a a case for an encyclopedia now you mention it!

Trying to get the last word on the last day of 2019.

I responded to a Marketplace ad for the estate of a tool collector, and was fortunate enough to be invited over to pick items before anyone else (today).

What's pictured is not nearly all I picked because the whole experience was a bit overwhelming. I could have spent all day there but I had promised Smokeshow I'd drop by his place this afternoon. As it turns out, we worked out a deal on 15 different Craftsman Professional screwdrivers which were duplicates (or triplicates, etc!).

A few more... (the last one is the developer already starting work on the other side of the far tree line, and staging some materials...)

Lugz, wow that is a lot of tables! I don't go to flea markets so I don't know any better, but all those tables were not filled every time right? I don't think there are any flea markets near me anymore.

Great haul Rileysan. The wrench box is way cool.

Bomber- nice closing speech. Love the part about collectively saving a couple tons of stuff. Thanks for leading us through another fun year of finds.

Still sorting and taking photos.

Here's part 2. Misc Plomb & Proto body hammers, unmarked mini hammers, some minty Stanley woodworking chisels, Craftsman keyhole saws, Craftsman clock, Craftsman mini tap & die set, and a whole stable full of NOS Craftsman USA pliers.

It's still 2019 here on the left coast, so I'll try and wrap up.

This is the end of my day's finds except for the Craftsman power hacksaw I purchased at the same estate sale because I don't feel like dragging it indoors at the moment, and two Stanley sweetheart vises I forgot were sitting on the floor in the car.

- USA Craftsman full-polish wrenches (missing a couple SAE DBE wrenches)
- Full sets of Craftsman cushion grip nut drivers with duplicates (SAE & metric).
- Unusual Ward's Powr Kraft 1/4" ratchet (I've never seen a selector like that before)
- Long-C Craftsman "Insolent Handle" screwdriver.
- Plomb 1/4" drive speed wrench
- New Estwing hatchet with leather sheath
- Craftsman socket boxes with partial sets.
- P&C, Crescent, and Craftsman 4" adjustables
and more ...

Oh, no, those tables were all filled between Memorial Day and Veteran's Day weekends. And there's an area in the back where vendors who didn't get a table would set up on the ground or out of the backs of their trailers etc. In the fall about half would go empty and in the winter they would rope sections off to confine the vendors to the area closest to the PL. Collingswood (Fri-Sat-Sun) is just as big and Columbus (Thu-Sat-Sun) is bigger. But Lakewood was the only Wednesday market around.

Rileysan! going out with a bang! Very nice.
:+1: Closing the year out strong.

More often than not, maybe 1/2 of those tables were filled. Sometimes less, especially in recent years. Sometimes more. I'll join in on Lugz's observation that most trips there were a bust. I was more likely to leave with vegetables than tools, so I didn't go often. There were one or three regulars with tools, but they tended to price their tools based on ebay, and seemed to have the same stuff year to year. On Sundays, the crowd reflected Lakewood's odd mix of ultra-orthodox and Hispanic. More than a few of the dealers catered to that crowd with lots of kids stuff.

Odd to say the least. I dare say it was like no other square mile in the entire United States on a Sunday morning. Like being in Jerusalem and Tijuana at the same time. Which was part of its charm for me. EDIT: But I will miss it the most on Wednesdays and Fridays. It was an easy stop on my way to work.

Rileysan, that's a high quality brace. You can tell by the chuck. I've forgotten who made that pattern. The 720 (?) Stanley chisels are a prize as well.

Nice haul Rileysan! Good to see you wasted no time after getting home and hit a jackpot. Want to see the power hacksaw and the Stanley sweetheart vises though.

I know nothing about braces, but this one has a Craftsman Professional label on the handle in the middle, which is why I bought it. Judging by the condition of the label, I'd say it didn't see much use.

There were dozens of chisels but these two were big and near mint, so I couldn't leave them behind!

Before the days of the high power 3/8" drill, Skil in the late '60s, to drill holes in wood ,the brace and bit were the answer. Millers Fall ,Pexto , North Brothers and Stanley were the main manufacturers. The very best were the North Brothers #2100 . Yours isn't one. Stanley took over North Bro, that's were Stanley Yankee came from. They all made various lines of braces, at the top were braces with the super smooth ball bearing chucks. Yours has one such chuck. If you pick up a modern Japanese WOOD OWL bit, you will be blown away by how fast and easy they work in wood. They are cordless you know.

Nothing worth noting today as it is Father's Day. The only thing I found that is somewhat interesting was this.

Looks like an old 50's or early 60's disposable propane tank. Unopened that weighs full to me.
