23x23 Garage insualtion

New homeowner here. Located in Smiths Falls, Ontario, I've got a 23x23 attached garage (attached just at roof by a breezeway). I plan to be in the garage a lot, so heating it is is gonna happen by winter 20/21. Its 2x6 framing with a trussed roof with a vent and I'm looking at insulating it. Going to get the electrical I need all done this winter/spring and insulate next summer. I'll be getting insulated garage doors installed and weather sealed, I want this garage to stay warm! I'm planning on blown-in insulation for the ceiling, but for the walls I'm torn between fiberglass/roxul or spray foam. I will be adding a natural gas heater, so will the spray foam be all that much more advantage over batt insulation? The walls are just over 8' tall, so I'm thinking plywood the bottom 4' and drywall the rest.

IMHO, spray foam is a better product. It won't compete cost wise R value to R value with bat, but it has other advantages like a tight seal.

One of the bigger advantages is spraying the roof deck and creating a semi-air-conditioned space in the attic. Blown in insulation traps heat in the attic and then you've got an HVAC system (or heater perhaps) sitting in the middle of a hot space.

There are blown-in insulation options for walls that I like better than rolled up bat, but don't cost as much as foam.

Most of your heat gain / loss is out of the roof, not the walls. IMHO, it'd be better to insulate the roof deck with foam and then bat the walls with standard insulation...

The way you are doing it will work too!

by roof deck do you mean spray foam the ceiling? Or the pitched roof sheating?

Spray foam is not DIY project. Fiberglass is a DIY project and is dirt cheap and easy to do ......once you get past the itching.

Spray foam is available in two different types: open-cell spray foam which is usually $1.00 to $1.20 per square foot and closed-cell spray foam which is about $1.25 to $1.50 per square foot (1″ by 12″ x 12″ area of coverage).

Fiberglass might be .20-.40 per sqft depending on location and availability.

Canada may really change the pricing........as you guys pay dearly.......
