26x26x14 - "The Average Shop" build

Hey all, I wanted to post this up as I had a tough time finding a similar build online.

When we bought the house, we bought with a 2 bay shop build in mind. 1 year in and I was itching to build more space for my car hobby. I wanted the ability to move my “shop” out of my attached 2 bay garage, to simply leave that for storage, kids toys and daily parking.

2 bay attached garage:

In the current 25ft x 22ft 2 bay garage, only having a 9 foot ceiling was a pain, our previous home had a 1.5 bay garage, with 12 feet of height.

For my lift, our former garage was amazing, and wasn’t used for much other than a shop for myself.

Almost a year after beginning planning, many design changes, designer changes (they ****!), and minor variance approvals, we were ready to break ground.
My goal with this build is a simple insulated, electrified and heated space. No water or sanitation access needed since we are so close to the house.

Here are the plans:
• Detached for simplicity/cost savings
• Not too big to take over the backyard
• Vehicle access to avoid having to move my daily car to be able to drive the weekend car (thankfully my contractor talked me into this rather than just building a double depth garage attached my existing garage).
• 26x26x14 high for max lift height of a pickup truck should I want to add a second lift (likely 2 post)
• Width of the garage was limited by the lot, length was limited by my budget and my wife!
• The right side garage will be allowed vehicle access by punching a hole in the existing 2 car garage. The new build will have to be leveled to the current garage to allow this.
• Pad in front of the garage to allow for backyard hard surface/parking if needed.

Minor variances had to be approved for exceeding accessory building height of 5M (the garage will be 5.8M) and distance to the property line of 3M (I need a distance of 1M to allow vehicle access to the left garage door).

The build began March 10, so this will be a slow post to build to see the final results. this terrible snip will give you an idea of where it will be placed on the property (1/2 acre lot in suburbia). Pool is gone!

Now for the waiting to cure before back filling and pouring the pad. April 3rd cannot come fast enough!

Today I got ahead of myself and picked up my bench/tool storage kit that was on sale as well!!

Its been a long time for an update, almost a month of that due to concrete curing time.

On to the updates!

April 6 the supplies arrived:

A few days later, the framing commenced:

sheathing going up!

Windows are positioned at the top of the wall as to allow for tool cabinets to be placed along the back wall. Kinda thinking I should have had a small one at standing height in the middle though.

This all happened in 2 days or less, it goes up fast at this stage!

The Mastercraft cabinets. I've been looking at the same ones. Garage looks great.
