3 vs 4 wire

Hello everybody! My problem starts from not taking pictures when I removed my old Jenn-air downdraft range. I did write down that the ground from the house goes the green wire and white wire from the appliance. I ordered a new unit and tossed the old one. Not very smart, the new one came with same 4 wire (green, white , red, blk) and my house power has 3 wire (ground, white, blk). I know it is 220v and the house power is 110v blk and 110v white. What bothers me is the instructions don't show that the white goes to white and the black goes to black. My intuition says black to black and red to white and then connect the ground to the green and white from the appliance. The white common will provide 110v but how is it getting from the ground connection? Help!

Looks like your 240V wiring does not have separate neutral and ground lines.

So, from the appliance, you need to connect

appliance green to house ground
appliance white to house ground
appliance red to house white
appliance black to house black

White and green on the range cord will both connect to the ground/green wire in the feeder. Red and black in the cord will go to the hot legs of the feeder/house wiring(black and white). And the white wire in the feeder should be taped with red or black tape on the end to show that its a hot leg, as white is for grounded conductors ONLY, such as neutral.

Does the wire that feeds the range connect to the main service panel or a sub-panel? If subpanel, then it should be a 4-wire feed as 3-wire appliance feeds off of subpanels arent allowed for safety reasons!
