30lb propane tank storage question

I am buying a brand new Worthington propane tank for general purpose, torching, bbq etc.

My issue is where will I store the propane tank in summer season i have following area outside the house and then I have basement.

I dont want it to get stolen in summer season if somone from alley jumps in the house from fence and steals it.

not sure what you guys do for propane tank storage.

oh yea, inverted trash can with holes for ventilation will cover it, you are genius!!!

but in summer the temperature outside the house reaches 39 real feel, I hope its ok because I see stores keep their tank outside in same heat and summer for sale.

It's best not to. Explosive and inflammable stuff should live in a separate shed. One where you won't cry too much if it goes whoosh or boom. Say, a little garbage can shed.

That said, I have enough compressed air and oxyacetylene to launch a Saturn V in my shop. But I keep my propane and gasoline in a separate structure. Mostly cause I've noticed that they have a tendency to leak.

If you can get a 30# that would be less trips to get refilled. and i do not recommend storing inside. no matter empty or full.

it will not hurt the tank to store outside

Unless you have a local ordinance against storing them indoors, I don't see empty tanks as a problem.

20's are a lot cheaper and easier to carry. You should be able to get 2-3 20's for the cost of a single 30, so unless the extra run time is really important, I wouldn't .

Look at Tank Traders before you buy. I have recycled a couple of old ones, using those yellow bands found at CTC. Somebody evidently had no idea what they had. TT have both 20 and 30# tanks.

20LB here is 46usd and 30LB is 76usd.

brand Worthington from Lowes superstore.

My wife painted our two like flower pots and put actual flower pots on top two of them while they were just sittinf. The grill had one in it's base and that was right by the house under a roof. Never had an issue with any of them growing legs.

Interesting.. I keep a couple of full ones in the back of the garage where the Wifes car is. Leaky and Drafty. Even after 5 years, they are all still full. None leaked.

Check your local fire code. Here, you have to store it outdoors.

the ones i have seen leak was due to improper filling, over filled and it comes out of safety valve. then the bleeder that every person who fills tanks by, ( When they should weigh them to fill) they freeze; then when closed the tend to not fully seat and when it thaws then it starts to leak vapor.


Most is operator error, not tank issues.

That is it, hide it in plane sight.

Either find a place to refill your tank or have something to cover them.
