So, this heavy duty vise is sporting the small 'u' in the casting of Columbian on the side of the vise. I was wondering if anybody knows some details of when Columbian used this particular design

It's at least a mid century logo for Columbian. I'm not sure when it was started or when it ended, but I know that it was in use in the late 40's into the 50's.

Current ones are also like that aren't they? Haven't they been like that since like the 50's?

Thought I saw it in an earlier advertisement, artist rendition?
Thought I saw it in a newer adv. went back to look, big U.

I think that style of Columbians started in the 1960's. The Craftsman version in the 1974 catalog is nearly identical.
