Looking at sealing my shop floors and the 511 has been recommended.

Has anyone used it to seal their shop floors? How did it hold up? Is it slick when wet? I don't expect excessive traffic on the floor. Just looking for something to keep automotive fluids from penetrating and staining the concrete and help keep concrete dust down.

511 is typically used as a grout sealer. I haven't heard of people using it for exterior concrete. I am sure it will work but it is expensive ($100 a gallon, not sure what purpose made concrete sealers cost) and pretty sure it says on the bottle that it is not for exterior use. Not sure if a garage would be considered exterior or not but either way I don't think I would choose 511 for my garage. I use it to seal stone and grout often and it shouldn't change the color, look, texture of concrete. It is not the best grout sealer that I have used but it is one that I use often.

I also use 511 for grout sealer. It doesn’t seem like it would be good for a garage floor especially at that price.

BTW, what’s a better grout sealer?

Use this on my grout and it’s amazing. Too expensive for garage floor. Look at pours plus possibly for floors. It’s from the same company. Miracle sealants.

call the tech number they are great.

I think rust oleum may own them now.

I like Laticrete/Dupont Stonetech sealers a lot. Been using them for a long time but they aren't as available most places. 511 is a great sealer and I use it often because it is so easy to get, everyplace sells it. There are a LOT of really good sealers out there if you look around but a lot are only available via ordering in or regionally available. You can't go wrong with 511 though.

Duneslider, what makes you prefer the laticrete over 511? Is it easier to apply? Longer lasting?

The Dupont Stonetech (Laticrete) has a slightly higher solids content. Higher solids content will lead to a longer lasting seal and a better seal and should go a little further on a bottle. Application is pretty much the same with all sealers. Stonetech isn't as easy for me to get now so I don't use it as often, have to plan a head better. I always have 511 in the garage and I just used it in my own house, so I don't want to make it sound like 511 isn't good.

There are other sealers that have higher solids content than stonetech, they cost more too. There are a lot of good sealers out there. 511 is carried at every Home Depot and Lowes, so it is easy to get, that is one reason it is so popular. Some areas of the country stock Laticrete products and carry the stonetech line.

I have used 511 on exterior stone tables and it worked fine but I felt it needed reapplication fast. I don't know if products designed for exterior use have some sort of UV protection or not but I have used exterior sealers on tables that seem to last longer. These were for clients, so I don't know the use and care and that may have been the difference.
