521# Blacker (Fisher) anvil

New guy here. I bought my first anvil 2 weeks ago. I got it home and weighed the anvil and base together -- it was 774 pounds. So I separated the anvil from the base and weighed it separately, it was 521 pounds. What a monster. The cast iron base, which was made for this anvil was 253 pounds. Over the course of the next few months, I hope to get all the old paint off and tune it up with linseed oil. I will post some pics of the finished product. In the meantime, here is what it looks like now.

Dude. Do you know its history??? Roundhouse?? Some perspective on what you have there, I’ve managed to acquire 5 vintage anvils, 3 Trentons, a Columbian, and a Sodefors. Together the 5 of them do not weigh 521 pounds. It’s very very cool. Enjoy!

I feel very lucky to have found this thing. I have zero knowledge on the history of this specific anvil -- I bought it at an auction. But I contacted the guy at the Fisher/Norris museum and he said it was the anvil and base that was used with the Blacker Power Hammer. It is dated at 1923. I have been grinning since the day I put it on my trailer to bring it home.

A very good Fisher find Hvp. Looks to have nice crisp edges from your pics and the Blacker stand really suits it . Now you need to find one of their big double screw post vises to go with it.

Thanks ORC. Since you made me aware that Fisher made a large double screw post vise, I will certainly be looking for one of those to go with the anvil. Any leads?

I will get a pic with a beer can for perspective. As for my wife. . . We were on a short vacation visiting relatives - on her birthday - when I pulled into the auction house to pick this up. I had bid and won the auction about 3 weeks earlier knowing that we were going to be in that area at that time. She was a good sport about it. But, for my birthday next year, she will likely buy another horse for herself.

Thanks ORC. Since you made me aware that Fisher made a large double screw post vise, I will certainly be looking for one of those to go with the anvil. Any leads?

No idea on finding one of the Fisher double screw vises other than the usual beating the bushes Hvp. I bought a 5" about 10 years ago and that is the last one I've seen for sale near me, but I don't search all that hard. If you can find a 500# anvil I'm sure you know good places to look. Joshua, who you may have spoken with at the Fisher & Norris museum has one of every size vise Fisher made up to 8".

I had to go to the shop to feed horses so I made sure I started drinking beer by noon so that I had a beer can to accomodate a proper picture. This thing makes me grin every time I touch it. I hope that feeling never goes away.

Grin you should. It’d be the centerpiece of most shops. If the floor could take it, it’d be the centerpiece of many living rooms…….

That's a legit question. I will likely tune it all up and make it a dark color with linseed oil, then I will park it in a location that makes it impossible to ignore. Although, I will need to make space for more large anvils, I have already brought home an (approx.) 300# bridge anvil to keep it company. (I added a pic where you can see the ugly orange colored bridge anvil in the background)
