I changed out my dimmer/turn signal/hazard signal/cruise control/windshield wiper switch today on my '97 Chevy half ton today. It didn't require any special tools, but it was a PAIN IN THE ****!!

I have done a few of them. Not to bad. Why did you have to change it. Not very often the entire switch goes bad. The hazard switch is the common problem. You can buy just the hazard switch from Gm for like 20 bucks.

But the tool to press down the lock plate so you can take off that wire clip. Sure does make it easier and faster!!! Sure was worth the few bucks i spent on one.

Dimmer switches all became a pain when they moved them into the column. When you have to change one, you wish it was a 1967 instead of a 1997. The new design in the column really ***** for maintenance and usability compared to the old design on the floor.

Have you already check the fuses, touching wires together at random wasn't too smart, but I'm sure you realize that. The way the dimmer switch works is that it resists the path to ground. The two fuses you need to check are the 10A fuse, dead center in the left column of fuses and the 10A fuse, fourth down from the top in the right column of fuses. you can also check out manuals such as chilton and haynes or probably you could contact someone who has a better knowledge about the said issue.

I found that out on my '00 Jimmy AFTER I shelled out almost $200 for the multi-function switch. When I looked at the old one, the hazard button had went south. All in all, the complete unit was swapped in about 30 minutes.
