A fluorescent light review.....

It was well past time to add some lights to the shop. I read a lot of reviews for basic 4 foot T-8 fixtures, many with middling reviews. I was happy to find this highly reviewed one at Home Depot for $34 apiece. They didn't have them locally, so I ordered 12 of them, which they shipped to the house for free:

After some research on bulbs, I opted for these:

I'm very happy with the results. I'm not very familiar with fluorescent bulbs, but these make a lot of light. They are 32 watt, 5000k temp, 2850 lumens, CRI 82. My iPhone camera doesn't do it justice.....it's daylight everywhere in there now:

Looks real good. I had spec'd in the same fixtures on my build, but after thinking about the time and wire to mount 28 of the things I went with plain 8' units.

I am starting to swap out transformers and bulbs in the existing 15 4 footers in my new shop - I see HD carries 4100k and 6500k T8 bulbs - you got 5000, interesting. I see the 6500k "daylight" bulbs are more expensive and some of the online reviewers were very happy with them. As long as these things last (claimed 20,000+ hours) I'd rather get the "better" bulbs right away. You can't have too much light in a work space - right?

I considered the 6500's as well, and as many are happy with them as are happy with the 4100's. Having zero real-world experience with those numbers, I chose the middle ground. I won't rehash it here because there's many detailed threads already covering it, but the gist of it seemed to be that one end of the spectrum would lean toward a yellower light, while the other end tends toward blue. With all of this, YMMV.
