Adding onto front of existing garage

Hi,

Been lurking awhile and admiring all of the awesome garages. We currently have a three car garage but as everyone knows it fills up fast. I was wondering if anyone has experience adding onto the front of an existing garage?

We have the room for a stand alone shop, but we aren't planning on staying here more than 5 to ten years. The goal will be to move south to warmer climates Tenn, GA, NC, etc.

I was thinking about adding onto the front of our single car portion of the garage building it out so it becomes two cars deep. Any suggestions or pictures of something similar would be great.

I was also considering one of the storage type structures (canvas types with arches) that I could keep some of the projects in to free up space. I wouldn't turn it into a shop (no heat, electric etc.) simply a structure to keep the weather off the bikes and car projects). ANyone have one of those for their toys?

Soory no pics but without seeing a pic of what you have already its hard to advise, it shouldnt be to hard to do what you are saying, I would check with local building code agency to make sure you can do it, we all know how they can throw a wrench in the works from time to time.

I agree with Falcon.....the main issue is going to be how close you are to the street....in most areas, you can't be closer than 20' to the curb.....

If you house is set way back from the street then it most likely won't be an issue....

Thanks guys. I'm at least 75' from the road, so that shouldn't be a problem. I'll shoot some pics on Friday when I'm home and it's still light outside. I think the problem is going to be the way the roof pitches on the single side of the garage.

I have seen some awesome stuff on this forum, so there's go to be a way!

I have the same situation.

Would like to build out the front of a two car toward the street.

I'll be doing the same thing to my 20wx24'd home garage. The plan is to extend the slab behind the garage 3' and then move the whole shop backwards toward the back fence. Then i will add 9' to the front of the slab and 12' to the front of the building. The following year i will lift the roof 4' to give a 12' ceiling height. Depending on my building department, i may have to demo the roof and use scissor trusses to get enough height for a lift. It sounds like a lot of work, but done in stages, it will be easy.

I have a future plan of adding a 25'X35' addition onto my existing garage myself . Currently my garage door is on the end of my house I'm on a corner lot . The plan is to go out 25' and build 35' deep and switch the driveway over to the street the house faces as well as the garage door being on the front of the house when I am done . Right now I am still sinking money into my HVAC Bus. so it will be aq few years before I realise my dream .
