I'm finally getting around to hooking up a very old Ingersoll Rand air compressor I picked up a while ago. Its a monster and has no real identifying tags other than the I.R. and a tanks stamp dated 1939.
I'm sure the wiring has been messed with over the years, changed or updated. I took a picture of how the wires were hooked up last night before I took the pressure switch all apart and cleaned it and greased it.
Now that I've run all the wire and put it all together, I'm getting ready to hook up the connections and all of a sudden I'm not sure how to proceed.
I searched around online, and from what I've been able to find, the wires that were hooked up before I took anything apart were hooked up incorrectly.
Here is the photo I took (only the two wires) and I went ahead and labeled each terminal to show what I'm looking at.

As you can see, the previous owner had the hot wire going to L2 and the Neutral going to T1. From what I can gather, those wires should both be hooked up to the load side (T1 and T2) and the wire from power source should be hooked up to line supply (L1 and L2).
Have I got this wrong? Did the previous owner have it wrong? If so, how is it possible the thing even ran?
Also, the switch appears to be upside down. Will this affect the performance and should I rotate it 180 degrees?
In other words, can you please tell me how this should be hooked up correctly? Thank you for reading!
