After Pictures - Mounting Irrigation Controller

I want to share this because I couldn't find anything about it. Recently bought house and wires in garage were everywhere (garage door opener, garage door laser sensors, irrigation power, 15 zones of 18ga wires, electrical in metal conduit outside drywall, etc.). I got wifi irrigation controller but none on the market (that work with Google Home at least) can be flush mounted.

Cut 120v male plug fished through drilled holes I drilled in the controller through drywall then out drywall to regularly mounted 120v outlet so to code which is behind tool chest drawers. Ran all zone/station wire through back, too, so looks clean.

Much better look and I do not understand why the option cannot be made this way from factory.

I don't care what you did, but it's not "to code".



400.12 Uses Not Permitted. Unless specifically permitted in 400.10, flexible cables, flexible cord sets, and power supply cords shall not be used for the following:

(1) As a substitute for the fixed wiring of a structure

(2) Where run through holes in walls, structural ceilings, suspended ceilings, dropped ceilings, or floors

(3) Where run through doorways, windows, or similar openings

(4) Where attached to building surfaces

Exception to (4): Flexible cord and flexible cable shall be permitted to be attached to building surfaces in accordance with 368.56(B).

(5) Where concealed by walls, floors, or ceilings or located above suspended or dropped ceilings

Exception to (5): Flexible cord and flexible cable shall be permitted if contained within an enclosure for use in Other Spaces Used for Environmental Air as permitted by 300.22(C)(3).

Sorry, no clue who the planners are, but this violates several codes I'm sure. That "installation" is not proper in any way, shape or form. You cannot have cord going through a wall like that

No comment on the drywall.

If you didn't want to do "electrical", the next best and code compliant solution is just to use one of those in-wall power kits for TVs.

Just curious here but I have the same controller and I have wanted to wire mine in a way that looks nicer. Could there be a way to do this that would be code compliant. Right now, mine is just far enough from an outlet I have to use a short extension to get to the outlet. I had planned to add another outlet that would be just under my sprinkler controller but if I am going through the work to do that is there a way to hide the wire/plug for a cleaner look? I don't think a recessed box behind the device would work but maybe it would. Or maybe I should just put an outlet in like planned and have a long cord coiled up under the box.

I could but the location of the controller isn't a problem and it's in an area of the garage where we park and the wall space isn't an issue. I was more just curious if there was a way to maybe hardwire it that would hide the cord but at the end of the day adding an outlet closer to it is probably my best move.

Does it use a wall wart or directly plug into an outlet?

It plugs directly into an outlet, no wall wart on this one. It's surprisingly a heavy duty cable, probably 14ga I would guess.

You could install a recessed outlet and get a shorter cord for it.

The manual says current draw is 1a, so thinner gauge would work fine

That controller appears to have a 1/2" KO on the bottom. It has a line cord coming out of it in the OP's photo. I suspect it was to be wired with conduit. An LB and ****** would likely work. But don't use cordage.

I'm assuming that's a dumb box, as it's not in the after pic.
