Any temperature sensor stable enough to be mounted outside a car?

Hello,
I am looking for a temperature sensor to monitor the temperature outside a car.

The MCP9700 (datasheet:http://www.kynix.com/uploadfiles/pdf9675/MCP9700-E2fTO_912185.pdf) would be ok, but I need an enclosure more robust because it will be mounted inside or near the front bumper.

Someone can help me find some like that? I am not able to find anything useful for this application. I will appreciate any help.

Get a piece of 1/2-3/4" PVC about 3-4" long. Attach it to some kind of a mounting bracket. Drill a whole through the side side and epoxy the sensor element in the center of the pipe. (That is how all "test" cars do it.)


You realy need to get the "characteristic curve" for that sensor. Those specs don't tell you the whole story. Thermistors are non-linear except in the middle of their operating range.

The spec sheet on the MCP9700 says +/-2°C (3.6°F) from 0°-70°C. So below freezing and above 150°C your accuracy goes out the window. If you are measuring air temp, you are good on the high end (unless you are measuring under hood temps) but you will probably have a hard time telling 0°F from -20°F !

You just want any sensor? Just about every car made today has a sensor mounted outside. My Volvo has 2 mounted below the bumper in the lower grille. My Infiniti has 1, in a similar location. Heck even my Ducati has one!
The Volvo part number is 1347010.

What's it for? If you just want a readout for an older car that doesn't already have one--there are dozens of choices imported from China for less than the shipping alone would cost in the USA.

The GM of the company I work for had a little readout on the dash with the wired sensor routed near the door hinge, up and around to its hiding place tucked inside the door mirror housing.
