Anyone else sick of the checkerboard pattern?

At first I thought it was cool, but over the years I've grown tired of it...especially the black/white...just too bold. the red/grey or black/grey is much easier on the senses, but what I would like to see is something with more solid areas. Has anyone ever done just one color? I don't think it is good design to have the floor competing with the car for center stage....ideas?

I like the Racedeck type panels, but I didn't want the floor to deter from the cars and my vintage signs, so I had the floor honed and sealed with a non-colored acrylic sealer. It's durable and 'concrete' looking :)

I like that floor! How will oil and other spills affect it as far as staining?
There has been a few businesses here in town thats done the stained concrete thing, i was thinking about something like that in a darker color that would hide any leaks with some kind of clear sealer on it.

I'm so glad you said that. I thought I was the only car guy who didn't like the checkerboard pattern! :) To me, I feel like saying "Turn it off please." A shop or garage is my relaxing time off zone, so I want it to be soothing and pleasant, not stimulating and exciting. I like cool colors for exactly that reason.

I too avoided the black/white checkered board. Its nice, don't get me wrong... but its nice for someone else, just not my cup of tea.

I ended up going with Behr's Silver Grey 2-part epoxy. pretty happy with it.

Well I have had my checkerboard Racedeck about 10 years now, moved it to the new house too. If I had to do it again, I would choose different colors, I added some Red borders and a Red stripe down the middle to break up the checkerboard. I also went all white under my lift for light reflection. The issue with other colors is light absorption, its a garage and you dont want any light sucking colors.

I still like it but I now sometimes wish I had gone with slightly different colors. Too expensive too change so I will die with it which is ok because I still smile when I turn on the lights in the garage.

Personally for an everyday garage I would not suggest this option. Shows dirt too easily. I would offer a chip or flake checkered. I've done a few but haven't taken pics.

... I still smile when I turn on the lights in the garage.

And there is the bottom line. Different folks like different jokes. Some people see the floor as strictly a utilitarian object, they want something easy to clean and durable. Other people also want durability and easy to maintain, but like the aesthetics of a pattern or specific colors. I say whatever floats your boat - when it comes to colors there is no wrong choice as long as when you see it it makes you smile.

BTW if you go with an epoxy floor - blending your own mix of DecoFlakes is an easy way to make your floor stand out as a custom job. Use the colors of your favorite sports team, Alma mater colors, your main set of wheels, tool box colors - have fun with 'em!

eveyone has to remember ... eveyone has a different taste and that is good. if you do not like black and white then use different colours... but do not put anyone down for doing it.

Personaly in the the same boat with bazzateer, and would be happy with a garage floor of my own! Like said earlier, if we all liked the same things in life would'nt that be boring?
We'd all drive the same pickups and cars, have the same type of cabinets, garage doors, well you get my point!

It's impervious to staining from common garage fluids - oil/anti-freeze/gas/etc. and allegedly the most durable coating you can put on concrete.

It's used all over in commercial applications - airports, warehouses, etc.

You can add stain to it or leave it clear like I did.

I don't have anything against the checkerboard pattern, but it really depends upon color choices. I would never do black and white as it would be the worst possible color combination to keep clean and would show the most dirt, but I could see doing a light gray / dark gray combination... I think that would look nice and would help break up the floor to hide dirt and stains etc.

If putting down VCT I would probably do a checkerboard in a 4x4 size grid. If using epoxy I'd just stick to colorchips because taping off checkerboard patterns doesn't sound like much fun to me.

Well, if someone thinks I am putting down someone else's floor you are getting the wrong picture... I said in the original post, the checkerboard pattern works with other colors, like red/gray or black/gray...I like it in the larger module too.
