Just installed a used panasonic window unit a/c in my garage. I already had an opening in the wall so I put it there, only problem is that it is in the south facing wall so I am worried about all the sun and heat the unit will be exposed to. Can I build some sort of "awning" over the unit to provide some protection?? How close to the unit can any sort of covering be and still allow adequate circulation around the unit?? thanks-

If it vents the condensor out the sides you would be ok. Remember that heat rises. Keeping the heat off the unit can help some, just don't block the airflow.

I wonder if a "louvered" type awning wouldnt be the way to go? Help keep the hot sun off but allow some airflow for the heat to escape?
