I need a 3/8" and 1/4" might be nice too. Are they all just rebranded cheapies from China at this point?

Is ebay my friend on this one?

I PERSONALLY feel they are pretty much all rebranded these days. It's just a reality of modern manufacturing/sales, especially for items that don't sell in big numbers. The ROI on such things just doesn't calculate, especially in these days of profit-per-quarter mentality.

I would look for a reputable brand, then look for the equivalent cheaper/no name brand that is actually the same product under a different name. Although Taiwan used to be preferable to China, China has done a LOT of catching up over the last 10 years.

I hear ya. I don't even know what reputable brands even still offer these.

Especially since western Forge went under.

Gearwrench is a fairly reputable brand that sells beam type. They will likely source decent ones.

If you're willing to shell out, Seekonk is made in the USA (in Seekonk, MA)

There's also Sturtevant Richmont, but then you're getting into something that I just don't PERSONALLY see value in for most use.

I have an old 1/4" USA made KD that I use very occasionally for pinion bearings. You might want to look on Ebay for used; as long as the pointer lines up at rest to zero, they should be just fine as they last forever - or until you drop a cylinder head on it. Calibration is easy to verify if you have a few weights. Not sure why you'd want a 3/8 drive, but same thing with it.

Edit- it's branded KD but made by Western Forge- WF probably made them for most of the US brands 20+ years ago.

I have a Craftsman 1/2" to 150 ft/lb I bought new, it's gotta be ~45 years old and still have the box too. I have a Plomb which is 3/8" on one side and 1/2" on the other. That's older & I got it at H for H.

No way! The beam style torque screwdrivers Seekonk manufactures are so cool. I didn't know anyone made those here. Pricey, though.

^ THIS.

The second-hand market is glutted with old beam-type torque wrenches. Ebay listings are full of listings for them.
I think I paid right about $24 for a 1/2" drive Indestro (including tax and shipping.) We used it once.
I have two Indestro 8099-1/4 1/4" drive inch-pound models here - you should be able to find one on ebay for less than $30 bucks (including tax and shipping.) If it's more than $30, the seller is delusional.
Same way with any of the S-K or Thorsen beam-types on ebay: $30 bucks absolute max (including tax and shipping.)
Ebay: Indestro - just search "8099"
Thorsen: whole mess of T150 0-150 ft lb models crazy cheap
S-K - mostly 1/2" models and they want too much money

Just make sure you don't get one that's been driven over or (like the other guy said) had a cylinder head dropped on it.
