Hi all - many years ago, built what I (foolishly) assumed would be the be-all, end-all garage of my dreams. Three car with an angle to the house, approx 1000sf.

Well, you know how that goes, never enough space. I'd like to put a double wide four post in.

So I looked at the Bendpak 9SW:
https://www.bendpak.com/car-lifts/four-post-lifts/hd-9sw/
I've got 21' inside length, 16' door, and I could easily enough put the posts 10" into the space between the two doors to get the 202" overall width.

But I'm puzzled about the length clearances.

The instructions state 24" front clearance (makes sense for overhang).

But 54" rear. That works out to more than two feet more than I have to work with. What's that all about?

Seems pretty weird to have that much rear clearance required.

Thanks for any input.

Thanks guys - a couple feet I get, but ... 54" > 2' no matter how I do the math. Maybe it's just for rear overhang if I ever get that 59 Eldorado?

Also consider overhead door clearance when the car is on the lift. 54” may not be enough if you don’t have high lift garage door tracks.

Currently the tracks are ~8', but I have 12' ceilings and can have them moved up and the door resprung.

And really, the door comes 7' into the garage when raised, so it's not like 54" could possibly be the "universal clearance for section door retraction".
