Best floor covering for retail store?

My parents have a local bakery here in town. The floor is painted concrete that has been in place for several years, so you can just imagine how it looks. Paint is chipping and the floor looks terrible.

My question is, what would be the best floor covering for a retail shop?

Usually VCT is the best all around choice.

We are doing a new system in a couple weeks by Duraamen called Terrazzi in 5000 sqft part of a liquor store. It's a sprayed Microtopping concrete with a casting of a special blend of glass, crushed marble and iron oxide. It's then sealed with 1 coat of a water based epoxy and 1 polyurethane. Compression strength is around 9000 psi. It's a subtle, soft and very classy look. It has a bit of a polished concrete look but has a much broader color choice that polished concrete can't offer. Although, I agree with Scott, polished concrete works great too. Just may be more costly in your case because the removel of the existing epoxy will give a polisher more work and may cost more.

What is a rough estimate for polished concrete per sq ft assuming I had the paint removed myself?

I think I have read on the forums that VCT runs roughly $1 sq ft if I do labor myself. Does that sound correct?

In the Nursing Home where my mom is at, their floors are a sheet goods that look like a wood floor. Being industrial and the amount of traffic on it, it looks like it has held up very well over the years. I think certain areas of the large WallyWorlds have the same thing on their floors in the areas like the clothing department, etc.
I think it looks nice and would suit your application.

What is? Polished concrete or VCT?

And how how much is it roughly?

Well, you said you'd do the labor yourself. Home Depot has VCT in stock at 68 cents a square foot. Add in the cost of the adhesive and you're probably still under a Dollar per foot. You'd have to do something about the peeling paint on the floor and any cracks but it's a pretty inexpensive and traditionally retail way to go.
