BIG floor...... What to coat it with?

I am getting my floor poured next week and would like to coat it instead of just having a bare concrete pad that will absorb various spills.

Problem is the floor is right around 2200 sq ft. and any epoxy coatings I see are $250-300 for 500 sq ft. I am NOT looking to spend $1K+ on a floor coating.

Thoughts?

Personally,I would do the epoxy. You will be alot happier in the end.

Even if you spend $1,000 on 2,200 sqft, that's .45/sqft. You're not going to get much of a floor at that price.

I am about ready to do the same thing and would like to see priced out what people paid this for this work.

My contractor said that Lowes or ACE carries a clear sealer of some sort that goes for like $100 for 5 gallons and then you mix in your own sand so it has a gritty surface.

I have no idea if the stuff is any good or not, anyone ever hear of or use this product?

Concrete pricing is going to vary from state to state. I would get a few bids on what is the going rate in your area. For a prepped,formed and poured floor.

I really only know "around" how much the concrete and around 50 tons of filler will cost as it is all included in my contract price. When we were discussing it, I know it was somewhere around $4000-4500. It is being subbed out by my contractor to a concrete specialist.

If you have 2,200 sqft and you want to put down 5 gallons, your floor's thickness will be about 3.1 mils with 15% waste.

The thickness of one sheet of 20lb copy paper is 3.82 mils. So, your floor's coating is going to be REALLY thin.

That's if the product is 100% solids. If it's 60% solids the final coat will be about 1.86 mils (with 15% waste). Which for some products may be just fine.

I guess some products will sink into the concrete. I would say one to three mils. So, 1.86 mils won't leave much on the surface.

I believe other products don't sink much and stick to the concrete like adhesive. Perhaps 1.86 mils would work in that situation.

The guy who poured mine said to stay away from the cheap stuff at Lowes. He said to go to one of the concrete suppliers and get a 30% acrylic solids sealer - said it would buff to a high shine if I wanted it to.

I am just going to put down the Epoxy-Coat when my floor cures.
