Hi,

Im looking to install my MR Heater 45000btu Propane Heater. I had a plumber come out and quote me $500 just to run the gas line from the 80gal tank to the heater.

I will be installing the heater and digging the trench for the pipe to come from the tank to the heater.

I think this is too expensive, Can I install this unit myself? How much is everyone else paying for their plumbing installs?

any help is greatly appriciated!

My tank is right up against my house. 120 gallon. I ran the lines myself. It is now stubbed into shop awaiting my Mr. Heater install.

I ran 25' of 1/2" pipe myself and was pretty easy. I don't think I would ever pay somebody to do it for me. The only hard part was getting the fittings to seal up. Trust me when I say get good quality pipe. The only pipe I could find says china on it. I hear the plumbing supply stores have better stuff. I got mine from Menards.

I run a propane Big Maxx 45000 btu heater and I did the total install myself, I just read up the codes talked to a plumber friend about the correct stuff to use. You will need an extra person to help get it up into position and fastened safely to the ceiling, make sure to have really good bracing in the ceiling to support it. I use 2 40lb bottles with a regulator that switches from the empty tank to the full one without having to turn the furnace off. I am by no means a professional but will always make sure the job is done per codes and instructions so that is safe and reliable. You can do it and don't be afraid to ask questions.

I mounted the heater and plumbed the black pipe myself. I have the propane company coming out next week to run the underground from my 500 gal tank that supplies the house. It is about 50' away from the shop, I was quoted $1.50/ft for the line, $50 for the regulator on the shop and $50 service call.

When I did mine, I used the yellow gas approved tape, but on the first 2 or 3 threads of the pipe, I used the gas approved pipe dope and then the tape for the remainder.

I have also think that leaving it to set up before pressure testing is a good idea. I have not tested mine yet...
