Brad Penn Break in oil.

I just got done with the complete rebuild of a Toyota 2AZ-FE 4 cylinder motor for my sisters 2003 Toyota Highlander I bought her as a wedding gift. I wanted to throw some credit to Brad Penn Motor Oil. I had origionaly wanted to go with Royal Purple break in oil but couldn't find any local. Honest Performance in Federal Way WA carries the Brad Penn Line and I thought I'd try out the Break In oil.
It's a straight 30wt with ZDDP added. Ran me about 5 bucks and some change a quart. It's a 100% American made oil. (Damn it feels good to buy American oil!) I'd have to say that I'm pretty impressed with it. I drained it out after turning 1K on the motor and it appears to be in new condition. Green color and all. The new rings appear to be seating properly with zero oil loss detected. We overbored it 10/1000ths. New pistons and rings. Engines power is great with nice smooth revs! Now I have no equipment or idea how to properly measure oil's properties, but this stuff seems to have done a great job according to the seat of the pants dyno. $32.00 Well spent.

Actually, it is based on the OLD kendall (the green stuff) base stock. Of course the refining and additive packages used now days are far different then the old days. I have heard nothing but good things about the Brad Penn line....especially in flat tappet situations.

Because it does not. Fresh rebuilds require break in oil now that the newer oils dont have the goods in them any more to break in a fresh motor.

In the vintage VW industry (and I'm sure others), there has been a very serious problem in the last few years with cams going flat. The 20 minute break in hardening procedure is the most important 20 minutes of your engines life. Finding products with a proper zddp mix is part of the solution, as is proper match of component hardness as well as proper tappet radius. When you have $5k or more in an engine, $5 a quart really doesn't seem that bad to help gaurd against having to tear it down after a couple hundred miles.

I use Brad Penn, along with a pint of GM EOS at every oil change in my big block, flat tappet cam engine. I don't want to take any chances of cam failure because of the lack of ZDDP

I used to use diesel oil for break in, but I have been told there isn't much zinc in that anymore even.

I still run it in the engines I don't run synthetic though. $9 for a gal of Rotella.

I bought Rotella to use in my 65 and my 71 small blocks, but have since learned that even the diesel oil has been reformulated to meet specs for the new low emission diesels.

I'm thinking of using some EOS as well.

This Brad Penn stuff sounds good. Wonder if I can find it in Canada...?

I've been buying my EOS from GmPartsDirect. Just enter EOS in the search or part #88862586.

I've also heard Lucas Engine Break-In Oil Additive is good. I was going to get a case from Summit

So, what would be the suggestion for incorporating EOS in an oil change for my flat tappet small blocks? Omit 1 quart oil, replace with EOS? Or less EOS?

The EOS comes in pints. I've been adding a pint at each oil/filter change and so far my cam is loving it

Even at $13 a pint, it's still cheap insurance

I used a Zinc Additive from Summit. Added a pint (8bucks!) to the reg 5/30 oil. I'll add another when I switch to Synthetic.

I see Brad Penn advertised in the old car mags (MoparMuscle, etc)

Brad Penn is supposed to be really good stuff. It have high zinc levels for all of us with oldies. It is also 100% US made from good old Pennsylvania crude which is considered to be some of the best stuff on earth.

Anybody running a flat tappet cam must be informed about the new oils with little or no ZDDP.
ZDDP Plus is what I have used in the past - 8 ounce bottle.
Summit now sells oil by the quart with the correct amount of ZDDP already added - there own brand name.
