Build up or out?

I have 6 cars I want to have in a garage, I have the choice of a pole barn 100 feet from my house, I have space to build up to 60 x 100. or I can attach something to the side of my house and come off at a 45 degree angle and I would have to make it a little taller and I could use hoists to lift up three and park three under them and make a service station look. It would be easy to heat and cool because it is next to the house. Both would have to be insulated though the pole barn I am not sure if I would use drywall or T11. Is building up more cost effective per square foot on average or building bigger?

Normally vertical space is more cost effective than horizontal area since the roof and foundation are more expensive than wall height in buildings. Comparing the cost of stick built to pole however is another thing entirely. Pole construction is generally much lower cost than stick. The comparison is further complicated by the cost of utilities and development of drives down to a building 100' away from your home. I would expect a pole barn to be cheaper, but the costs for ancillaries (HVAC, lighting, electric, water, bathroom, driveway) could make it more expensive in the end.

Building up more cost effective. however....I'd go with 60x 100 away from house. no idea how big your house is but even if you go 3000 attached to house you'll likely be into serious house upgrades to tap into existing utilities, HVAC etc for shop. Sure.. nice to not walk outside to get to shop but also nice to have the short walk and separation between shop & house. wife won't complain about shop noise or fumes if its separated but likely to be an issue if attached. I'd
be a lot happier with cars all on one level than on a hoist... as well... with 6 cars I'm thinking you have lots of car/garage buddies so a more private spot away from the house will likely pay off in long run ......

You did not tell us where you are located. In a cold climate the comfortable access afforded by adding on has an intangible value that only you can assign.

Would it make sense to do both on a smaller scale? A pole barn for those vehicles that see limited use as well as general storage and then a climate controlled addition with space to garage and maintain the more active cars in your fleet?

Have you considered doing both an attached and a detached garages?

Obviously they both have advantages...

As a note, I prefer detached, so in the instance someone in my family accidentally burns the house down, my stuff is safe.
