I'm transitioning from underground schedule 80 CPVC to IMC with compression fittings as the 30 foot conduit run emerges from the ground to connect to my pedestal. Can I make the transition under ground, do I need to tape the coupling? Or do I have to emerge from the ground with the PVC?

Whats the conduit for? Are you going to IMC for physical protection? Why compression fittings? I've put miles of IMC underground, never protected a coupling yet. Most folks would run PVC the whole way unless their's some reason to transition to IMC
I admit it is largely decorative. I do want durability as the pedestal is rather exposed and accessible to passers by. I know PVC would work. Its just that the pedestal is all metal. The panel, junction box, two meter bases, shut off switch, unistrut, two 4x4 inch welded metal posts - all metal.
Also, making a feeble attempt to make the thing less ugly, I prime and paint the whole thing. I've had more luck getting the paint to stick to metal than plastic.
I don't need to use compression fittings, I just had them on hand.

wrap it with 10 mil tape and be done with it.
