Camera idea.

I was thinking of getting a dummy camera from HF (25 dollar model) taking out the insides and putting a night vision webcam with a cable extender on it and wiring it to my Desktop. DO you think it would work?

Why not just buy a wireless outdoor camera. A Foscam outdoor IR unit runs close to $100 at Amazon.

What do you want it to do, exactly? If you want night surveillance you need a camera that will actually see something identifiable at night, right?

Cheap cameras give blurry, low res images - will that do what you need it to do?

If the cam you have will do what you want, why does it need to be in the HF housing?

What does tinting the lens do for you?

Trying to understand your end-game here.....

Doesn't the HF cam have a red blinking light on it? I think that alone would be a great deterrent!

Its going to be on a window sill halfway out pointing twoards the garage. I would get the housing to keep water out and tint maybe because someone would see the webcam, i probaly wont do that though. I have one with blinking light but it doesnt really do anything.

Agreed, I'm assuming it's going to be used as a basic deterrent, which makes tinting the lens helpful because it's obscured, maybe he just wants the overall feel of security provided by the HF Housing, but you're right a blinking light and no camera would probably put people off quick.

From my experience with cams here at work, you'd be better off as a deterrent with the $25 HF unit. IF you see something on a cheap cam, you won't be able to ID who or what. Guaranteed you can't make a facial ID worth a **** unless they walk right up to the cam and look it in the lens. If you want to know what came by, you need to be in the 720p range. Ubiquity sells some non-IR cams at that level for around $100. Our Samsung systems cost $500+ and we're replacing them because you can't tell WTF at more than 20~30' or so in broad daylight.
