I want to build a carport on the front of my garage. The idea is to make it look like an old gas station. My orignal plan was to use just two posts with a beam. The garage is 32 long where the carport will go. I wanted to put the poles in 8' from each end leaving 16' in the middle. This would make it easy to cut the corner coming in and out of the carport.

I build cars ...my brother inlaw builds the houses. He said it can't be done. I think I've settled for 3 posts with 3' hanging out on the ends.

What do you guys think? Any engineers?

What does code in your area say? The code can be a PITA, but for stuff like this it can save you a LOT of cash and frustration.

It can be done, sure. Gas stations canopies are a lot larger with spans up to 50'-60' and cantelevered roofs out 20'+.

I don't think code is a problem. I'm in a small township and had no inspections when I built the garage.

Wow.

I would still look into some kind of code for reference as to what to design to. Snow load has got to be the concern, I would imagine.

Most cantalevered stuff is made from steel structures. Were you planning steel or wood? Wood is probably not a good chioce in my opinion - moisture, sagging, attachment and construction issues are going to plague the design.

You can accomplish a lot with laminated beams these days when it comes to spans (as an alternative to steel beams). With good support and foundation, I don't know why you couldn't do it.
Pics of your garage and setup would be a help in understanding your situation.

Here's a shot of the garage.

I want to put it on the side without the doors. I was figuring a metal beam sitting on large metal posts with a wood framed roof on top of it.
