I am finishing my garage and have a dilemma regarding the ceiling. My first choice was to strap it and drywall. Two problems with that idea. In some areas I need to drop the ceiling 2-4 inches and I have one area where it needs to be almost flush with the floor joist. I can step that area down if needed. The second is finding a drywall contractor in this part of Maine all the contractors are booked out so far they will not even look at my project. There is living space above the garage so it needs to be fire rated. I would like the groups thoughts on fire rated suspended ceiling tiles. The other question if dry wall is the way to go what is the best way to drop the strapping or attachment for drywall when it is more than the standard width of a 2x4. Theare is 40' X 24' .

Use a 2”x6”…..or a 2x8…..or a 2”x12”. This shouldn’t be that hard unless I’m not visualizing something.
