Clicker torque wrench o-ring under head?

Hey guys. I'm wondering if I would simple be able to remove the c-clip and pin that hold the head of my two torque wrenches on and simply replace the o-ring that goes between the head and handle without losing accuracy. I know a "little" gets lost everytime I breath on it, I'm talking a huge difference. Also, what is the o-ring for? Keeping **** out of the handle? Or does it mash as the head clicks?

The calibration array is generally deeper down into the handle. Depends I'm sure on what type of unit you are working with. What happened to the unit to need o-ring or seal replacement? One thing is you may need to re-lube parts; one reason they change and need calibration is the friction of the internal parts is never perfectly consistent because of wear/lube variations etc. My understanding is the spring itself is pretty good provided its taken care of (unwound,etc). Please not that I'm not a tech specialized in this area, but I have autopsied a unit before so I know what it looks like under the covers. I'd defer to someone with suitable expertise, and if you have a serious use application requirining a cert you should send it in for repair during annual calibration.

I'm not concerned wh perfect calibration, but would like to keep it close, if it will be thrown off. The o-rings have dry rotted and are in need of replacement

I wouldn't take it apart to replace the o-ring unless you send it off for calibration... kind of pointless to have a torque wrench if your not concerned with "perfect" calibration. The o-ring keeps junk out of the body of the wrench, where the mechanism is. Likely when you pull the head pin, the innards will go flying or have a high chance of shifting out of place.

Were talking micro-adjustable or split beam?

I recently sent my old Snap-On (20-30 yrs old) torque wrenches to Angle Repair for calibration... $50 a piece, well worth it IMHO every few years (just a DIYer).

Don't do it. At the other end of the head is a tapered tail with a little block of steel ("pawl") pinched between it and the adjustable spring. Good chance that block will move and then you'll need to take it ALL apart, reassemble & re-calibrate.

Just to clarify, it's a "husky" torque wrench made by kd tools. Not that it makes aby difference, buy just thought I'd share. Is there another way to change the ring or other options?

Just try to stretch a new one over the head or handle.

If that doesn't work you could send it to Angle Repair where they will do basic repairs, lube, adjustment and calibration for about $50 flat rate.

If you don't care to maintain the original 3% or 4% accuracy you could run the adjustment about 3/4 max and lock it so it won't move, note the setting, then remove the handle. A new o-ring will easily roll up the tube.
Put the handle back on at the original setting. It's tricky tightening the lockout without moving the adjustment bolt but any slight movement Should only throw the cal off a couple pounds.

That's originally what I was hoping to do, I don't know how out of shape the o-ring would be or if it would make it over the head/handle without breaking or getting worn out itself. If anybody was wondering, this is what the head looks like. I borrowed this picture from somebody here on the forums (found in a google search and saw garagejournal link) but it wouldn't link me up to the post, so thank you to whoevers picture this is, I come in peace!
