Do any of you know of a commercially available welding table like the Miller Arcstation, only less expensive. Yes I like the Miller (we have one at work) I just don't have the coin to buy one for myself.

Price the materials and the cost of having a shop waterjet/plasma the slots/holes. You may come out pretty cheap in comparison.

The reason you have a welder at home is to be able to repair/fab something is it not? 2 sticks of angle iron and a plate or even found materials. I am all for buying when it makes sense but unless I bought the welder for a specific need would have left it at the store and bought the bench.

I've borrowed a buddy's nomad table before. I was actually surprised how nice it is. It really is as good as it gets for purchasable portable welding tables. I've been meaning to buy one for myself. I have a repair cart I built with a trusted 1/4" top and a jig table out of 1" plate that uses Bridgeport clamps. I still want one.

I have a nomad as I dont have the space for a dedicated table right now and Im buying time until I find that killer deal on a thick steel top. Its a nice table for the money. I mainly tig on mine and its held up fine. I do have to be careful of heat. If it gets too warm the top will bow up some, but has always come back down.

I have two solid welding tables for heavy jobs. But for small quick jobs I always pull out the Nomad. I've had it for 3 years or so now and I use the heck out of it for small, lightweight, quick fab jobs. Folds up and stows away.

I concure with the opinion on the Nomad Table. I paid $129.00 for mine without the clamp and magnets and it is one of the best $129 I think I have spent. I expected it to be a piece of junk for that price but needed something I could fold up and get out of the way when not in use and I ended up being very pleasantly surprised by it.

That tilting feature would come in real handy for those of us that are position-welding challenged. Looks like my welding table project just became exponentially more difficult. Thanks Journaler.

5 people recommended the nomad.. Why is it you don't want it? For the price, it's worth its weight in salt.. Mine is mostly for mobile tig and is indispensable. If I had a way to move my 1" table around easily I would!

Try Craigslist. I've sold two welding tables on there. One small one w/ 1/4" top and one monster 3' x 6' 1/2 top on wheels. I sold the monster for two hundred just to get rid of it and the smaller one for $50. Now I just have to build my moderate size one to keep.
You need to work out if you want a portable or a fixed and what you want to do on it.
Those Nomad things would be useless for any sort of heavy welding when you want to hold the job through cool down as they would warp more than the material they are holding, BUT if you are only doing light work etc I am sure they would be fine.

I wish I would've found this post awhile back. I bought a pair of Nomads and the leaf a few months back. I kept going back and forth on it before I pulled the trigger. I almost want to say that I lost some sleep over it trying to decide what to do.
I have a welding table already that I built maybe 5 years ago but it slowly became a work bench w/ my vertical porta-band on it (swag), drill press, and vice. I also use it a lot to work on stuff (like rebuilding a head on top of a piece of plywood) so it wasn't very useful as a welding table anymore. I don't really have room for another table either, my 2 car garage is PACKED now, there's barely room to maneuver in there now and believe it or not, it's really clean and organized, i just have too much stuff.
Anyways, i pulled the trigger. I'm not 100% thrilled with them, I do wish that I could afford a REAL jig table like a Bluco or even the JMR table but i'm not ******** enough for one nor would I have the room if I could afford it. The Nomads works fine, haven't really had any issues with them. The adjustable height is amazingly useful for comfort and the fact that it's portable and small is nice too. Instead of having to move the part around and reclamping it so u can access different parts of it, you, yourself, can move around the table and just keep the part clamped. The table works well with stand F-Clamps (I bought a bunch from HFT). I mig weld on my table (more heat and spatter than tig) and they are holding up just fine. Every now and then I go get some spatter that I have to grind off though and I keep a sanding sponge close by to "clean" the table top. The holes/grills are also nice since it lets the argon sink down instead of just floating around on a solid table.
Picture below is when i first got them, I had to assemble them in the kitchen since I didn't really have a whole lot of room in the garage.
Oh, and as small as the top might be in specs, it's really not that small, so far i've yet to actually use all 3 attached together, I've only used one at a time.
