I did some trading and now have a Campbell-Hausfield Cast Iron Series Two-Stage 7.5hp, 3,450rpm, single phase compressor w/80 gallon tank. 21CFM @175psi, equivalent to current model CE7000.
This same compressor was marketed with a 5hp 1,725rpm motor with a larger motor pulley, and produced less CFM, but still enough to meet my needs.
Both use the same pump. The primary piston is 4.75" dia, with a 3" stroke. The other is 2.5" dia., 3" stroke.
I was told the pump was bad. I checked it and it seems to be OK. Turns out the Dayton electric motor, 184T frame, has toasted windings. Not cost feasible to repair.
There is a magnetic starter on this compressor for the 7.5hp motor.
Doing some searching, I have located three new single phase motors. To include:
5hp Dayton 184T frame, 1,725rpm $200.
7.5hp WEG 213T frame, 3,450rpm $300
10hp Baldor 215T frame, 1,725rpm $300
Common sense tells me the WEG would be the best choice, except the frame and shaft size is different. Probably just a few holes to drill. My magnetic starter should be compatible and the rpm is correct so I can use my existing pulley.
The 5hp and 10hp are options, with the 10hp looking attractive for added performance, but might be more complicated and costly to install than just the motor purchase price.
All three would require a new motor pulley. Not sure about magnetic compatibility.
Electric power to and from the breaker box is not a problem. I have enough to handle the 10hp motor.
Is my common sense sending me in the right direction with the 7.5hp ? Or would you use another option? If the 10hp motor requires a new starter, how much would one cost?
A also have to purchase a new pressure switch w/unloader.
The 10hp motor is 5 miles away. The 7.5hp motor is over 100 miles away.
Whatever way I go, if the pump is good, which I think it is, I'll have a nice compressor less than $1,000.
