I've been reading here for a while but haven't seen this come up so I figured I'd ask since you folks have more knowledge about this than I ever will.
My house is 20 years old and the garage floor has taken 20 years of abuse, being used as everything from storage, to workspace, to dog house.
The last part is what's troubling me. My wife insisted on keeping the (outside) dog in the garage when it was too cold out for her. Being a dog, she had to do dog-type things on the newspapers that were left on the floor (for that purpose.) Said things soaked through the newspaper and into the concrete.
The papers would be cleaned up and the floor sprayed with bleach to disinfect it.
Now the dog has passed on to that great doghouse in the sky but I'm left with a violated concrete floor. On nice days, there's no problem with the concrete - it's dry and doesn't smell. But when it rains, the areas where the dog business was done will soak up humidity and actually become wet. Where the dog didn't do things, the floor is fine and dry.
So what's the best approach for this as far as some sort of covering? Would an acid etch clean the concrete enough that it could be painted? Would I be better off with a tile or roll-out mat?
