Craftsman 150 DP chuck removal

After reading the many posts on the Craftsman 150 DP, its viability and its ease of restoration I was able to obtain one (model 103.24534). It is in very good shape and I am happy with its appearance and working order.

One accessory that I was given was an unused mortising attachment. The owner said that he never used it because he could not remove the chuck. I also have had no luck. I have read through 31 pages of DP 150 references but I am still at a lost. It has the Jacobs 33 chuck with screw on collar.

I am at a loss and ignorant as to what I need to do to remove the chuck. I would greatly appreciate it if someone who has mastered this could walk me through the correct removal procedure.

When I look at the chuck/quill assembly, I see the chuck. Above the chuck there is what I believe is the collar - it has three hole in it about 120 degrees apart. Above that is another smaller collar like piece that has a split key in it but it does not go completely through the quill shaft.

I sure wish I remembered how I tackled this...

I had to take the chuck off an old Walker Turner a while ago.

I'll let you know if I remember how I got it off....

This method did not work for me, I have the Model 150 /103 24511. It is rusty and it would ruin the chuck and or key if I tried to force it.

Any other suggestions?

Personally I would not swap them back and forth. In theory you can but I have found on some drill presses the chuck does not go on as straight as before removal. At least mark the angular position of the chuck relative to the spindle so you can put it back in the same position.

I liked Rockwell/delta's method of swapping the inner spindle a preferred method.
