Craftsman tool box help

Hello,

I am new to this forum. Any help would be greatly appreciated!


This is my first post. I just got craftsman tool box cart I believe from 1960s. See Pic. It was free. I was planning on sanding it down and painting it. A co- worker told me " it has lead paint and I should not sand it or disrupt the paint, Myself or family members could get sick from lead dust even after I wear a respirator after sanding). Do any of you restore old tool boxes with lead paint on them? Should I get rid of it or keep it?

I won't advise you what to do because it is a health and safety concern.

That said, how does he know for sure that the paint used in that box contains lead?

He doesn't know - He is just assuming because of how old it looks

Get it tested if you are that concerned. Or, test it yourself. Test kit, $10-$20.

Just use paint stripper. No dust

Or, leave it as is, and enjoy it's history and scars.

Wet-sand, outside on a plastic dropcloth. Knock down the edges and repaint.
Or, wash it down and seal it by spraying clear paint over it. Patina is ALL the rage these days.

Your box dates somewhere between 49 and 52.

Need to leave it as found and use it... A good WD40 bath will do wonders,

Have the same box, soneone repainted years ago, looks like **** but still a good ole tool box. It does not bother me and still does its job.

Degrease it and seal it with clear coat paint.
