Hi everyone!
With the current heatwave, I have some time on my hands to do some research for my future garage. From what I can see, the last discussion on this topic took place in 2015 here on GJ. So I guess starting a new thread isn’t a bad idea.
So this is not about a certain unit/ model or manufacturer - it’s about the general functioning of bioremediation parts washers and preferably first hand experience from users running such a system - be it commercial or private.
I want a parts washer and need to decide which way to go and I’d like to do a deep dive on the functional side of bioremediation parts washers.
My basic understanding is that you maintain a basin of microbes that live in your wash fluid with roughly a 4 week lifespan before they need replenishing.
The wash fluid is generally water based, biodegradable and rather specific to your use case. There is “universal“ as well as “non-corrosive“ and others depending on manufacturer & system.
The basin/ wash fluid is kept warm somewhere around 40°C/ 104°F give or take for optimum conditions for your microbes.
Microbes need to be added/ replenished - how that is done depends on the system you bought.
Full renewal depending on use after anywhere between a year and a year + a half.
Needs to be constantly maintained, can’t be left sitting alone longer than one microbe exchange interval.
Will cost money as long as it is kept ready to use.
Power outage/ cooling down of the basin can be problematic/ death of the microbes.
Even though it’s eco friendly - when the filter mats, fluid needs to be exchanged & disposed it still needs to be disposed with a hazardous waste/ recycling company.
I’d like to hear your opinion on this if you’re running one of these. Also especially interested if that bioremediation parts washer replaced a “traditional” parts washer and what you think comparing the different “systems”.
