I'm going to start up my impact socket collection and was wondering what people use the most or what they suggest; deep or standard depth sockets. They will all be 1/2" drive and used with an IR231C impact wrench. What are the type of applications where you would definitely need one or the other? Thank you.

Deeps, when you compare my deep sets to my shallows its like looking at a almost new set versus a heavily used set.

I got standard and metric versions of this deep set a couple years ago. I like them very much.

They go on sale for 50% off once or twice per year - that's how I got mine.
So far, I haven't felt the need for standard depth impacts.

Thank you all for the quick replies. It looks like I will start off with a set of deep sockets (metric and SAE) first and buy the standard depth sockets when funds become available. Thanks again everyone.

I haven't read a single bad thing about the Harbor Freight impacts. You might want to look into those. I'll be picking some up sometime this month.

Doug - you may be able to answer your own question. What will be the intended purpose? If it's suspension and tire work on the vehicle, definately deep sockets first. If only bench work, then shallows will be sufficient for most work. However, as Krusty stated, if you're serious about automotive work overall, you'll be better off with both. Please believe me, I paid for my house down payment by having the right tools for me and my staff on major construction jobs. It'll work for you too.

I was actually going to say start with the full set of the shallow ones and then just do a smaller set of the select deep ones that you would need for most of your applications.
of course you could do it the other way also

Just picked up a 14pc. deep set (3/8-1-1/4?) from Harbor Freight. Both the standard and metric are on sale for $20 per set. I was also at sears today...their set 12pc.set was 89.99. I thought it was a pretty good deal and wanted to pass it on.

I would get these two sets, they will cover about anything you will run into.
