Dental Torque Wrench

So I’m almost at the end of a dental implant procedure (it’s been almost a year) and this was the last check before the crown gets mounted. The specialist dentist said “I have to put some torque on the implant to make sure it’s solidly in the bone”. I asked him if he had a torque wrench as a joke. Behold the dental torque wrench :

The surgeon found it quite amusing that I knew what the reamer was and the tap with buttress type threads.

I did not find it amusing, because as a machinist and machine repairman, I used similar tools every day on steel and cast iron, not bone

I was awake but with whatever he gave me I didn’t care. He would talk to me and ask to open wider, turn my head, etc. Very strange.

I could feel him using the torque wrench when installing my implant “stud”. Asked about it, he showed me. During the healing process, they used a stud to keep the area clear. They kept backing out and they would go down. Had an Xray done for the urologist, radiologist and His tech could not figure out what the object was . I knew right away what it was when they showed me.

I asked what the "torque setting" was when the did mine. She told me some number that didn't mean anything to me. I'm pretty sure I didn't have any "meds" in me at that time.

For our son, they used a small camera "wand" and then 3d printed a mold of his mouth/teeth so they could line up everything to start with. The brackets and everything came pre-made, and were a drop-in fit.

He got to keep the 3d printed mold of his mouth too.

I think you may have just found a torque wrench that is pricier than the SnapOn model.

Yes. Have not had an image done since then to see if it’s passed thru.

Ive swallowed two pill batteries. One as a kid, the other i wasnt that small lol. Taste good, but wouldn't recommend it.

Surgeons and dentists have some VERY cool tools. Often very specific, made of the finest materials and finished like jewelry. Eye wateringly expensive too.
After being wheeled into the O.R. for a big time surgery I see several long tables of strange looking shiny tools neatly lined up on the towel covered surfaces. I point over to them and ask the guy who does the wheeling in " Is all that for me?" He grimly nodded up and down.
My surgeon was super cool and actually allowed me to assist when removing a stent from a ureter. He was struggling a bit while using a "trans urethral" scope with a grabby tool to retrieve the stent. He did the looking and I operated the trigger of the grabby thing on his command. He gave the final yank.

I had three pins removed from my 4th and 5th metatarsals (5th was broken). When the doc pulled them out I swear it was just a really clean chromed pair of linesman pliers.

They now coat them with a bitter tasting substance to, hopefully, keep kids from swallowing.

Last time I had a crown done, the drill bit came loose from the chuck. Dentists stops and says "Do NOT swallow!"
That could lead to a bad outcome.

To see if the screw “took” they try to loosen it with 45 newton-cm. If it comes out the whole process is a no go and you need a bridge.

Oral surgeon had some pretty cool tools and means to measure down to the mm.. Seems like dentists kinda do this "by hand" but I'm actually not sure if there is much of a procedural difference.

Dentist vs oral surgeon for this stuff? What say you?

Guy putting in one of my implants dropped the socket he was using to screw in the post screw .. of course he said don't swallow and of course I did. Guy was a graduate dentist in the Prosthodontics program at the time. So they sent me for xrays, which led to more hilarity ..

My choice would always be the person who does a lot of that procedure day in & day out. When I needed surgery to remove a kidney tumor, the local urologist surgeon probably would have been fine but he only did 1 a month on average. The surgeon I had at City of Hope does them all the time, teaches robotic surgery all over creation, and has probably seen every complication possible. If it goes smoothly, no problems. If, as you say, it goes "sideways" you want the practiced hand of a master. Mine went smoothly.

If it goes smoothly, no problems. If, as you say, it goes "sideways" you want the practiced hand of a master.

I had to have someone install a toggle bolt in my bicep area. I chose having it done at a hospital, vs a surgery center. At my age, the extra $250 deductible was piece of mind.

I've been to a few different dentists in my life, and one of my favorites was kinda a car nut and had 'Hot Rod' magazines in the waiting room. He always made a point of asking me about whatever project I was working on and several times I'd asked if he had dental picks that he was getting rid of that I could have, and he obliged me a couple of times. Nice tools - not that made in India stuff.

I tried this with my last two dentists and they looked at me like I was going to use it to start a dental practice outside on the sidewalk and nicely said 'hell no'. She had a neat little torque wrench too - I heard it click when she was using it. I was tempted to ask if I could see the calibration papers for it, but I'm pretty sure the joke would not be well received. Oh well.

I think my dentist office sends out all his tools ( picks, scrapers etc). The hygienist will open the sealed instrument bag after she opens the plastic rack they’re shipped in. Almost looks like a silverware rack from the dishwasher.
