I have a broom finished concrete floor that I would like to grind smooth and apply a epoxy finish. Would a Diamabrush get it smooth enough or I would have to use something more aggressive.

Yes, the Diamabrush will work for a broom finish.

Shea knows his stuff so I would go with that I just wanted to double check with him on this. We always recommend against it because the manufacturer does. I have not tried it first hand. Shea have you done it over a broom finish?

Hi, this is the response I received when I contacted Diamabrush directly about using their 7" hand tool on my concrete patio/walkway:
"The life of the 7” blades is approximately 2K-3K sq. ft. before the blades need to be replaced. If used on exterior broom-finished concrete (like a sidewalk or patio), you will wear down the blades at an excessive rate. It will remove the coating (it will knock down the broom-finish), but you will burn up blades very quickly. Please be advised there are some customers that have used our tool on broom-finished concrete because it is the fastest solution on the market, but it will burn your blades up very quickly.

Yes, we've used over a broom finish a few times. It's spot on that the more aggressive the broom finish the faster the blades will wear as the other poster found out. However if you just renting the tool from Home Depot you don't need to worry about blade wear. Just make sure the tool you rent has fresher blades.

JT - thanks for starting this thread, I have a similar project, my main barn floor is about 1200 sq feet and has a pretty rough broom finish that I would like to smooth out and put an epoxy finish on.

It sounded like a 7" grinder may be a bit on the small side for my project, is there something else that folks have used for a larger area? This is what I am working with. Thank you!!

Diamabrush makes several larger tools designed to be used on a buffer or sander. The Home Depot often rents them.

Good post. If you are pouring a new slab with the intention of applying resinous coatings (epoxy, Polyurea, etc...) request a smooth trowel finish.

Leaving a broom finish is a deficit not a benefit to these coatings. It all has to be ground down which will take a bit longer and be harder on the tooling.

I was asked recently to proof an article for a friend and he was under the impression the broom finish was beneficial so I am thinking there is some misinformation out there on this subject.
