dig out stumps vs grinding?

Lower pressure branch to our house. We are about 1000 feet from the road. Repair tech said there are no shutoff's at the road. I was kind of surprised at that fact. He used a big set of clamping pliers to clamp the poly line shut while he made the repair.

I'm not sure if 811 would even mark that.

Around here they hit public utilities, so for me, nothing past the pole (and since nothing is below ground, I wouldn't have anything marked).

A real stump grinder will eat 24 inch oak stump in maybe 5 minutes. The guys that do it around here use big Vermeer machines that make short work of big stumps.

I don't know if you all missed my earlier post. I've had the gas line (and water and electric) marked by 811 at least 3 times since I've been here (3 years). The marking for irrigation lines to be put in was off by six feet and the landscapers hit it with their trencher. I knew where the marks were from the prior locates, that's why I did not call for a locate this time. This line we hit yesterday was 6-8 feet away from the prior marked location.

I've got more trees to take out. I just submitted a request for another locate. Will be interesting to see where they mark this time

The public side in this instance is 1000' away at the roadside. The 6' miss was certainly on my "branch". And yes, they locate all the underground utilities feeding a dwelling from the street all the way to the house.

Gas company here marks all the way to the meter at the house. Same for power.

Our water meters are up by the street behind the curb/sidewalk. From there water lines are private and not located by miss utility or whatever your locate agency is called.

Communication is always a **** shoot here.

We're in the midst of a building boom and you'd be lucky to get 811 to come mark in under a month. It's been a real fiasco for contractors trying to stay on a schedule.

Our tickets are required to clear in 72 hours. If not they send an emergency locator out.

Caveat is the day of the call does not count, so seconds start midnight of the next day.

I think our tickets are valid for 10 days.

I don’t usually fool with this, our trades do.

There's no time limit there?
Theoretically 48 hours, but it doesn't matter because there aren't enough locators to handle the demand. I had the power company out last month to trench new 400a service about 400 ft from the road to my house and even they couldn't get a locate. The locating company gave them a verbal "we don't think anything is in your way" based on an online look but didn't actually come out to my property. The power company went ahead and trenched knowing they'd be waiting a month or more for a physical locate. I'm shocked they took the risk but glad they did. There don't seem to be any consequences for the locate company missing the 48 hour window.

I think the consequences are the bill they foot if they don't locate and there's and issue.

I'd be doing lots of CYA if I was digging down there....

Reminds me I need to call the PoCo tomorrow about tilling in the easement

My understanding comes from an AI summary of the rules in my state and county so I take it with a grain of salt, but it says that a late locate doesn't give someone the green light to dig. The digger is still responsible. The penalties to the locator seem to range from a strongly worded letter to a $10k fine from the state but it's a judgement call by state regulators. It looks like even the strongly worded letters aren't being sent right now.

Here in ny every operator has to take a dig safe safety class, free off change, on line. If the excavation is delayed more than 10 days we need to call for mark out again. Most of the agencies i work for have to have a copy of the mark out request prior to start of work, it's really a cya.

Yes. It seems the RR commission has a say in just about everything. And they're pretty much assholes about it.
Add the GLO to that list. Had to deal with them twice regarding boat/diesel issues. About a tablespoon of diesel cost me over $300, which was cleared with a little dish soap within an hour.

My neighbor rented a grinder last weekend. Impressive machine, sitting on tracks. He said $350 a day. This was a walk-behind machine. Cutter wheel was probably 20" diameter.
