I installed a 5000 btu widow air unit in the shop last month to help with the 90+ degree afternoon heat. I didn't care to much that it either had to run all the time or I had to go out of a morning and turn it on to start the cooling process. After some web searching I came across this programmable thermostat made by the Lux http://www.luxproducts.com/thermostats/win100.htm
This thing really works!! I've got it set to keep the shop at 78 during the day and 85 of an evening when I'm not there. It was the best 35 bucks I've invested so far in the shop!!

Pretty slick. I've been using a timer that I bought at HD for about $15. It has a bunch of time periods and handles 15A. Pretty complicated timer. When I read the user reviews that said it was too complicated, I knew it was a good one LOL.

If I read the criteria right, that t-stat won't work with my older 12K BTU unit. "Electronically Controlled Air Conditioners That Have Automatic Restart of Cooling After Power Resumption" - mine does not. It takes it a while to restart the compressor if the power is interrupted. My unit is about 10 yrs old.

And many of the digital ones (like the 8K unit in our bedroom) already come with a built in t-stat.
