I have just finished wiring up the 2nd (detached) garage and I wonder of I have a open ground problem. I live in the lovely state of Illinois so I used over 400 feet of conduit. I have 6 circuits in the panel 2-15amps, 2-20 amps and 1-30 amp 240v and 1-50 amp 240v. The correct gauge wire was used on all circuits and GFIC on all the 120v circuits.
My 15 amp circuits run the outlets on the top of the 2 side walls and are controlled by a single pole switch (these outlets are going to control bar lights and neon lights the will be mounted all over the walls causing a glow seen from space). I was using a simple 3 prong tester while wiring everything up and I get the normal 2 lights on for correct wiring when I flip the switch and apply power. When I flip the power switch off, the one light on the tester for open ground is faintly lit. This is with nothing at all plugged into the outlets, once I plug in some bar lights or neon lights, all lights are off on the tester. Is this normal? At first I thought that it was nothing since I get the OK lights on the tester when powered on but the power switches I used are lighted switches that will only light dimly in the off position that only glows full brightness when I have some things plugged into the outlets. Do I have a weak ground condition somehow that is then 'satisfied' when I have some transformers plugged in?
