I agree with Phatsub.

Some people on this board are losers. Instead of actually doing stuff in their garage they polish everything it seems.

I agree with Krusty. If anyone is taking this a little far it's you. I too am not a polisher of tools or boxes (see post 2) but I am also not completely disrespectful of those that do. I know that a lot of the people who said yes are professional technicians (Krusty, Nissan_Crawler, Autoace etc) and some would probably put you to shame "doing stuff in their garage". Maybe they can wax their box and still get their "stuff in the garage" done because they're way better at it than you.

People spend (whether you agree with them or not) a lot of money on posessions that are important to them. Some choose to look after them, some don't. Some have posessions with really high resale values, some don't.....

Get over it.

I don't see how toolbox waxing is much different(if any) than waxing your car. I'm a detailer and am very **** about my car's cleanliness and finish. It makes an impression when people see it, and it helps it hold its value. Same for a toolbox. When someone walks in your garage, a clean toolbox shows that you take care of your equipment and that you pay attention to details. Those are both qualities that I would look for in a mechanic. If your toolbox is all scroungy and your place is a mess, I wouldn't leave my car there for a second.

Nope. Just a quick wipe down with WD 40 every other month to get the grime and dust off.

IMO they are toolboxes and a few scuffs and scratches here and there provide the right working image to me.

I blow it off once every other day or so, being in a body shop dust is very common, but I wipe it with a microfiber and a fast wax simalar to mothers every other week when I have time or it needs it.

Hey, I live in the freakin Tropics. Everything rusts here. I try to keep my stuff as long as possible even though I know the elements will eventually win. Any bodywork skill I possess is due to our climate and its effects on auto bodies. So, no I don't think I'm a loser. Just a survivor.

I wax my set probably every 3-4 weeks, and spray on the quick detailer in-between.I do it on my lunch break so it doesn't cost the boss any labor time. It's the biggest investment that I have, and they need to last many more years.Everybody is different, and I would never criticise another tech for either keeping his tool setup nice,or junky.Tools are really personal to me,so I like to show my pride.Just like how a firecrew keeps up on their station and equipment, that's how I want to be.

Ditto the fast wax or quick detailer stuff... I wipe mine once in awhile with Griots quick wax and it seems to at least keep em in better shape than not ever doing anything to them. I can see the mentality in both camps... Its certainly a personal preference. Just like a new car. Two guys buy a new Chevy truck for work. One guy makes sure to run his through the car wash every week or so and keeps a good coat of wax on it... has a bedliner and side cap protectors. The other guy tosses his gear in a bare metal bed.. washes it when it rains and only empties the trash as it falls out when he opens the door. Both trucks will run equally well and do what they need to do. One just might have a little better resale value. :)

wow...there's something I never, ever, EVER thought about doing.
I guess the point about someone's box being more expensive than their truck has a lot of merit, but then again, have a tool box that's more expensive than my vehicle is something else I never, ever, EVER thought about doing!

Now, with the help of my lovely and talented wife, I have gotten something else waxed in the garage a time or three...

Wax mine every couple of months, use quick detailer or blow it off every day. A lot of dust here in AZ and they're black boxes. The other guy that works for us laughs at me sometimes but that's why mine look brand new and his looks hideous :) I don't see why someone wouldn't keep such an investment clean. Cool site here btw.

After thinking about it I think it would depend on the box. My platinum colored boxes will fair well and look good despite being covered in dust and dirt. My dads red box doesn't look as good. I am seriously considering paint a box Swiss aqua to match my truck and I would probably polish that and keep clean because it looks bad otherwise.

Also for the humor answer: "heck no, thats what I have a girlfriend for" (wait thats for the tool not the box.

I wax mine every other month. I wax anything that I use outside and is made of metal - my mowers, outside lights by th front door, metal mailbox - anything. Once a year I clean the A/C compressors and wax the housing and the blade. All of these items are exspensive and you can keep lasting longer with just a little time and effort.

WOW........i never would have thought that someone who takes pride in his tools would EVER be called a loser :headscrat

is everyone becoming an ******* around here :spit:

To quote Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman re: assholes..."every family's got one!" :lol_hitti

If I spent 2, 3, 4K or more on a toolbox, you better believe I'd be waxing it every once in awhile!

I found this site to get ideas on lighting setup, flooring, reviews of tool storage units and power tools. Pictures of other garage setups gives me ideas for my own.

You're an idiot. I'm not even going to waste my time sugar coating it. Let's see you roll your P.O.S. up to somebody's $25 million jet and see how long it takes for them to tell you to get the hell away.

Oh, and as for doing stuff, I've built my own car trailer, a race car, a '57 chevy pickup, building a rock crawler, built countless pieces of farm equipment, built football size free span steel buildings, built houses, torn down and rebuilt jets. When I was 10, I built my own go cart that would pass cars on the highway with ease.

What have you done?

Nissan Crawler: I really like what you did with that Craftsman pro, nice work, How has that box held up over time? I've seen those at Sears, not too shabby looking.

I'm with Nissan Crawler (beautiful CM) on this one - especially on the idea of people with higher end "toys" like to see clean, organized shops & techs.

Wish I would have thought of waxing my boxes earlier - no matter how well I tarp off a spray booth in the garage, I still manage to get a light film of paint on everything. Would have been nice to be able to rub some of that misting off the boxes and keep them looking better.

....if I woulda known then what I know now.....

I waxed mine when it was new and here ant there since when it really needed it. I oaid a lot of money for it so it only makes sense to maintain it. I also completely believe that anybody who wrenches for a living will tell you when the customer sees a nice clean well organized tool box and work area as opposed to a ratty looking piece of **** with stuff strewn all over it makes a difference. If you went to a doctor and he had **** lying all over his office and fingerprints on all his equipment you would run out of the place screaming.

It's held up great, it's 6.5 years old in that picture.

(nissan) A small joke and im a idiot ? thanks for the pick me upper for the day...

Read much? :headscrat As CAT said, I was talking to the guy I quoted, hence...the reason for the quoting. A tire shine joke doesn't bug me. The complete idiot opening his mouth when he knew nothing of it, did.

More food for thought. Every fall we washed all or our farm equipment very thoroughly. In the spring, they got a light wash again, and waxed for the year. When we sold the farm, our equipment sold about 20% higher than the comparable equipment at other auctions, and most of our stuff was 10-15 years older.

Good point, taking care of your stuff is a good investment. I made money on my Snap-on box, I just sold, not too much, but more than I paid for it. I also used it for 8 years.

Waxing the box must be a climate thing? Is it for preventing rust? If so, that's probably why I've never heard of it before, I live in a hot and dry climate. I apologize if I offended anybody, that wasn't my intention.

I wax my truck once a year. That's enough waxing for me. I wipe the dust off my toolbox whenever it gets to heavy (maybe once a year) and the tools are wiped with a rag before getting placed back in the box, to rid them of grease and dirt.

i dont think tool box and gay are even in the same ball park .i can see some reasons why one would wax there box once a year. hold its resale value. easier to wipe of grease. customers see a shiny box and think your shop has it **** together. before i bought my first new box. i had hand me down craftmans that was rusted and had 10 different colors of over spray on it .the box i have now its not the best but i take some pride in that mother f~!@@##

I have my SO boxes for about 30 years. I have waxed them 3 or 4 times and they still look almost new even after 1 move cross country and 8 or 9 other moves. My CM boxes I have not waxed (yet).

I like to keep things nice, clean and organized - even my tools and boxes. I even polish my work boots. I'll leave the Cooter Davenport look to Luke and Bo Duke.

I never said organization and cleanliness was wrong.

Nissan - There is a difference between waxing and polishing your tools/boxes just to do it, or having a job/career that involves having a clean and neat appearance always. I have the utmost respect for your lines of work.

I wipe down my tools when they're greasy or dirty. I wipe down my box with a rag or paper towel if it is dirty from my hands or other people's hands.

In the end it's up to the owner to do whatever he or she wants to do with their property. I screwed up. I'm sorry to those who I offended in the process.
