Dryer connection

Son just moved into the new house from the old farmhouse on his property. The dryer has a NEMA 10-30P plug and the receptacle is NEMA 14-30R. Is it better to change out the cord on the dryer over swapping the old 10-30R receptacle from the farmhouse.

This is a really bad idea, your dryer needs to have a new pigtail installed to match the new homes dryer receptacle.

Change the cord on the dryer. They are about $10-$15 at HD or Lowes.

Sorry to highjack this but can you purchase cords longer than 6 feet? I have a stackable washer/drier with the drier on top. It limits where I can place the unit in the laundry room making for wasted space.

They do make longer cords, but not every store sells them. Depending on where you live there may not be a store near you that sells them, so you may have to buy the cord online.

The NEMA 14-30R has an equipment ground, not just a neutral. Get a new pig tail and ground that dryer.

You need the dryers original instructions to confirm if there are jumpers to remove or install inside the dryer at the wire connections. Many times you don't just change the cord, but also relocate a wire inside or install a jumper, etc. The instructions will tell you and show you what to do. I save all of my instructions, receipts, etc for just about everything. Every few years I cull the file of stuff that I no longer have.
