Electric heater brand

I recently completed my shop in Texas. It is 35x45x14 with insulated doors and closed cell spray foam insulation. We have propane at the house, but not run to the shop. Is there a preferred brand of electric heater for this size shop? I’m hoping to keep the temps around 60 or so only when I’m working in the shop. Or, is there another type of heater that would be better for my shop?

I don't think you would want the electric bills that would come with a heater big enough to make a dent in a building this size on a cold day....even tho it doesn't get real cold in Dallas. For that matter, I'm not sure they make an electric heater big enough for that shop

I think either another propane tank or running a line from your existing tank would be the best deal, then get a Moline or a Hot Dawg heater.

What is your electric rate and do you know the number of degree days you will have ?

I have an outbuilding at my current project that around 1600sf and a single 4000k 220 electric heater can warm the whole space. With spray foam your load is going to be low especially maintaining. In my case the heater was directed more towards the general area where I was working ... it was back about 2/3rd in the space directed towards the 2/3rd. I had the electric while the property was under construction .... the new propane service is in -- now a 38k unit. I maintain temps in the low 60's

I have electric pushing .20KW -- so it was not cheap to heat. Propane is about 1/2 the cost currently.

You may be able to use a mini-split

These can be purchase to run off Propane as Jagman suggested, plus you can install couple say at each end bldg.

I know you have spray foam insulation but I wonder if these type heaters will cause condensation on your spray foam? Asking I don't know.
Well heck,with this type heater you would have to install flue pipe out roof or side so maybe not good ideal

With a space that large you will regret electric. Sure it may be cheap and easy at the start but it’ll bleed you dry in bills to the point where you won’t use it. Set some money aside for a gas heater. Up front costs will be worth it tenfold in the long run.

I have had one of these in my 24x36 stick built shop with upstairs (gamble roof). Insulated, but not super well, and somewhat leaky.

It was ~580$ back then.

I live in IN, so much colder than TX. I keep the shop ~45, unless I am working out there. It will maintain 65+ easily.

I've been pretty happy with it. Electricity is pretty cheap here, last I checked I think .08/kWh. I didn't want to mess with the hassle of getting propane set up, plus I keep planning to install a mini split so I have AC as well.

Considering your climate, have you looked around to see if you could buy a used heat pump system that would give you both A/C and heat? It probably wouldn't work well if you have the shop doors open very often in the winter, since the recovery time would be slow. However, many of the newer heat pump systems can run down to temps in the 20's before they need the heat strips.

I'm building a 34'x46' SIP wall building 14' walls, (4) awning windows (2'x3') a 36" fiberglass man door and (2) 12'x12' insulated doors (undetermined R value at this time. Walls are 6.5" thick which yields around R23 and the trusses have a bonus room upstairs so the floor (which is also the workshop ceiling using a 12" bottom chord) will be getting spray foamed to R38.

I'm planning to be here a while so I'm looking at the Mr. Cool DC Inverter DIY heat pumps. 20 SEER, 10.5 HSPF, DIY install, inverter design, 100% efficiency at 115° and at -5°. Take a look at them, you should be able to get away with the 2- 3 ton unit. From web reviews and youtube feedback, everyone who has installed one seems satisfied.

Efficiency is relative ...


Many mini-splits have a COP pushing 4 .. so depending on temps the OP would be 4x ahead with a mini vs straight resistance heat

Even with my .20 vs his .11 cost per KW .. heat pumps out perform propane cost

You are correct, I mistyped efficiency vs. capacity. I believe I read 80% efficiency at -5° at some point. Didn't see anything about the high temp efficiency though.

I assumed ... since you gave all the other information.

Electric resistance heat is 100 percent -- it's just expensive for most because electric is expensive in most parts of the USA..

A mini-split being a heat pump can produce more BTU with a given input as it's moving heat. The ability to do this is based on the design -- the COP is where you see this.

The capacity is how the unit will operate over a give temp range .... this is given so you can see how it fits into your climate. The hyper heats have the ability to keep capacity as the temps fall IE: 15k unit will still provide 15k at 5 degrees .... This is different vs the COP ... although the better units have lower full capacity and higher COP

People mix up the hypers .... most mini-splits will work at lower temps ... they just can't all supply the same output at those levels .... full capacity gets mixed up with efficiency

So, since I live in Texas, and our winters are usually fairly mild and our summers are not, would the mini-split or the universal system work better for my application? This, of course applies to heat and AC. I won’t be using this daily. Maybe a couple of times a week, if I’m lucky. I don’t need to keep the shop at any particular temperature constantly. The system will only run when I need to use the shop. I know very little about heat and AC systems.

You do a heat load and cooling load on the building based on the building and the climate --- temps you wish to maintain.

This will give you the BTU's -- in warm climates they get sized for AC and this is normally enough for heat.

In colder climates problems can occur -- as outdoor temps drop the size of the unit obviously needs to get bigger ... in colder climates this can make the unit oversized for cooling (not good for humidity removal).

If you think about a 30 delta -- trying to make 70 in a house is 100 outside and 40 outside. What happens when it's 10 outside ? Need more capacity !


This is where the variable speed equipment can extend the range and still have capacity -- size match

Any recommendations for a reliable source for this info? I’ve been to multiple sites that offer a “calculator”, but the numbers are all over the place.

We have Farmers Electric Coop. No choice since we live outside the city limits. It’s pretty high at .11 cents/kWh. We lost the ability to choose electric companies once we moved out here.

You are in the same AO as I am in. Also on FEC.

I have a 35x35 with 12' walls, Spray foam, but do not have insulated garage doors. I did just insulate the back once with foam panels from Lowes.

I run the ProFusion 25k BTU Unit from Northern Tool. When I have it cranked it up, It turns my shop into a sauna. I set it to the lowest setting and leave it on. Keeps it around 55-60 degrees in there.

Have not had the chance to run it during a real cold spell yet.
