I want to relocate my meter base from the house to a large outbuilding (barn) exterior which will remove overhead wires from the pole to the house. I would add a 200A breaker panel in the barn. I would like to make a long ~150' run from the new panel to the house to supply the existing 200A panel.

What's the maximum length that I can run a circuit from the new primary panel to what will now be a secondary panel?

Caveats?

there is no maximum length.

One BIG caveat is that your house panel will need to be converted to a subpanel which means isolated neutral bar and adding a ground bar. also would need to move any ground wires onto the new neutral bar as well as the bonding wire from water and gas lines and GEC from the rods.

You will need to run 4-wires from the shop to the house panel as well. The existing 3-wire service entrance cannot be used anymore unless its individual wires and a ground wire can be added to it.

this can prove to be a challenge on some obsolete panels.

Can you post some pics of your house panel w/ covers on and off and the service entrance wires if accessible...

Length and load are a slight concern here, whats going on in the barn? An easy way to do this is,,, mount a 200A with feed thru lugs on the outside of the barn, feed 4/0 alum to house. Its easy to do because all the lugs fit the wire. There are 8 spaces in one of the standard stocked panels. feed anything outdoor, maybe even a well, couple outdoor outlets or RV from it and use 2 spaces to feed 100A panel in the barn. You may even locate the inside panel conveniently etc.
