My shop has a Yamaha DTS 6.1 system in it. It's pretty sweet. Go to turn on the receiver and you can hear the unit click on, but no sound or display. Are there any electrical gurus here that can help me troubleshoot this? The outlet works fine, the receiver is 6 years old, a Yamaha RX-SL 100, AV receiver. The manual mentioned only that there is a safe mode when the speaker connections arc- but that is not a problem in this case. Any help is always appreciated..

Sorry but troubleshooting a complicated piece of electronics over the internet is pretty much impossible.

All I can say is to check the easy stuff: Pull the cover and look for loose connections, blown fuses, or burnt/damaged components.

Did you somehow get it into a remote mode, standby, have it looking for a wrong input? What happened just previous to the failure? Any changes, moves, whatever?. Have you given it the required smack on the side?

My first guess would be the thermal fuse on the mains transformer. There will probably be a small standby transformer in the unit which will be OK hence the relay trying to switch power to the mains transformer but there is no power getting to the primary windings. I can talk you through a few checks but some nice pics of the unit with the lid off will be needed. :)

I have downloaded the service manual from the web and confirmed what I posted above...The mains transformer has a thermal fuse and the unit also has a small standby transformer...Ill bet its the mains transformer fuse...:)

Is it one of those wazu audio/visual units that does everything??

Any chance the mode selection for speakers is wrong...or the wrong audio source?

Does the front display light up?

If no display....start thinking power supply

Precision- thanks! What does it take to change out the transformer fuse on this unit?

Larry, ddawg, Hifi- no lightning, display does not come on, there is no speaker switch- it is an on-screen (wazu) menu for that feature, can't even get it to power on.

If the transformer checks out okay, I would examine the voltage regulator circuits. With the test points marked on the schematic, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to rule the regulators in or out. Also check the relay's contacts (looks like RY1, but can't quite read the image clearly). I agree that it looks like the standby transformer is probably OK, since it is able to energize the relay that switches the main transformer. However, if the relay is bad, the unit would click but not power on.

There are other possible causes for the problem you are having, but some of them are relatively unlikely (and harder to find). I'd be looking at the power supply first.

be sure to check all the connections, could be a bad solder joint or cracked solder joint. I had a problem with a display blanking after 30 or 40 minutes, turned out to be a bad solder joint.
