Epoxy flooring question

I priced out an industrial epoxy floor system for $2500 installed (2 car garage). It is solvent based, 10 mil base coat, full chip coat, and two clear coats (40 mil total thickness). Also 100% solids. Does this seem like a good system (and price?).

thanks

If it's solvent based, by definition it can't be 100% solids. Solvents evaporate, a 100% epoxy has virtually nothing to evaporate - hence no solvents or water included.

The 40 mil total is good, if it's a quality coating it's very good, but in this case it's kind of confusing. That's a lot of epoxy or urethane! Our system is usually 21 - 29 mils thick, and we're at the high end of residential and even shop applications, probably the thickest DIY product on this forum at least. Maybe they're including the thickness of the flakes? That's a bit unusual, but if you have a 100% solids product that has solvent content I guess you can do anything.

Also generally the clear coats aren't near than much thicker than the primer and base coats. Just 10 mils base with 30 mils clear is clearly unusual.

What kind of prep work - grinding? And no primer coat? Hmmm...

BTW, "Industrial" is pretty much meaningless. Find out exactly what facilities use the products. Larger companies often have their own labs and techs test and evaluate coatings and often allow their names to be used in the manufacturer's marketing materials (sadly other companies forbid endorsements).

Ask (demand) for a detailed list of the exact products you're going to be getting, and the associated MSDS info, then post it. We have a few pro installers who will be able to figure it out for you better than I can.

It is a 4 coat system and he is counting the flakes as a coat. Prep is by grinding, followed by a base coat, full chip flake coat (about 65 lbs worth) and 2 clear coats. Is NOT using primer a problem?

I saw a garage done by this installer and the epoxy extended out the front of the garage where it is constantly exposed by weather. It is two years old and still looks good. Epoxy job is supposed to have a 5 year warranty.

It all sounds good to me. Many guys skip the primer coat and just use the base. Ask him what products he is using.
