Epoxyshield: How many coats are too much?

Hi All,

I'm in the process of finishing my garage floor, I'm using Rustoleum Epoxyshield Pro. Here's a question, is there any advantage to putting down more than two coats of epoxy before clear? Say, three or four, then chips, then clear? Does epoxy fall into the "more is better" category, or does it become a case of diminishing returns? The floor is 19x23, so the number of kits to buy wouldn't be that outrageous.

What do you guys think?

Thanks,
-Joe

As long as you have good adhesion to the floor, there should be no problem. I have about 4 coats of ArmorSeal on my floor. Thicker coating is better. How thick will each coat be? I've been told, and some may dispute this, that it's better to put several thin coats down compared to a thick coat. Kinda like painting anything else I guess.

Hey thanks for the reply, I was hoping it would be ok for multiple coats, or more to the point, that there would be no reasons to specifically not put down more than two coats. I have a floor with a broom swirl finish, I'd like to put down enough coats to make the swirls mostly go away. I'm just starting the project though - degreased and power washed tonight. Who knows what the surface will look like once it's etched.

I've actually remembered to take photos each step of the way, will post to a new thread when there is a little more progress.

Yeah, I've always had it drummed into my head that when painting anything, more, thinner coats are better than less, thicker coats.

bmwpower, I just looked through your garage build thread, really nice work! Those roundel rosettes are seriously slick!

Thanks,
-Joe

There's no reason that 4 or more coats wouldn't work as long as each is applied in the time frame that Rust Oleum specs.

Whenever we do 1/8" or thicker high build floors on clients projects, its always done in multiple coats usually 3 to 5 depending on the system.
