External Torx

As a shade tree mechanic, I have only recently run into some external Torx bolts. I got them off with a 10mm socket but a 3/8" seemed to fit a bit better (not a high torque application, but they were removed and installed with a 3/8 M12 impact gun).

Shopping around, I see that the sizes are different then the normal Torx bits (T10, T15, T20, T25, etc). More like E10, E12, E14, E16.

Is that normal and what are the most commonly required E-Torx sockets ?

Yeah, normal. The external torx numbers are different from the internals.
Wikipedia says that an E4 fits a T20 and an E8 fits a T40. I don't have those handy right now, but it sounds about right.

I don't recall the last time I pulled one of my external torx sockets off the rail, so I couldn't tell you which ones are commonly used.

The T is a bit used for as fastener with an internal torx. E is a socket for a fastener with an external torx.

Only time I needed them was to remove a seat out of a Benz. Needed them fast so I got the set that HF sales. Used them that one time and never again since then.

E torx can be found on many vehicles. E4 is common on some ignition switches.
The most complete bargain priced set is the toptul set Dennis sells on EBay.
Check Cripe distributing for a smaller Gearwrench set.
The E Torx sockets are handy to have working on late model vehicles.

picked up a set of torx plus EP sockets for the new aluminum body ford trucks but havent had to use them yet. also have E-torx sockets that havent been touched as well. not a common bolt but never hurts to have sockets for it just in case.

Have a couple sets, first one usually grabbed is the cheap nieko ones off Amazon. Seems they are designed thicker walled, so I've yet to break one and justify a more expensive set. Also have used 12 point wrenches in tight access situations. BMW starter bolts use a 3/8 ratchet wrench, cause it's the only thing that fits in the hole between the engine and firewall.
So, in short, I use them everyday professionally, loan them to the yard guys, impact etc and have yet to break a cheap one of the externals. The t series however I have broken every size and brand I've touched. Those are worth spending money on. Twice. I keep two sets in my cart, snappy and Marco, and have 3-4 sets in the box, plus a set of hf ones hidden as a last resort. Tool guys love when you hand them 3-4 broken bits at once.

Thanks
